Nokia's Credit Gets a Moody's Lift as a Cash Conversion Cut Tests the Bull Case
Published on 11/06/2026 at 05:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deNokia shares came under heavy selling pressure as a broad retreat from technology and artificial-intelligence names swept the market, with the stock down 7.7% on the day. An earlier session had already seen the equity shed 8.8% to close at EUR 6.76, with Reuters describing a weak trading backdrop in which tech stocks were headed for their steepest decline since June. The semiconductor index at one point sat in double-digit percentage territory in the red, a slide that reached well beyond individual names into the chip sector at large.
Against that bruising tape, the Finnish network equipment maker had two pieces of company news for investors to weigh — and a trimmed cash target that cuts closer to the investment case than the headline profit guidance suggests.
Moody's Moves Nokia Into Investment-Grade Territory
Moody's Ratings upgraded Nokia's long-term issuer rating and its rating on senior unsecured obligations, lifting both from Ba1 to Baa3, according to media reports. The outlook is positive. The move marks a notable vote of confidence in the balance sheet at a moment when the equity is being buffeted by forces largely outside the company's control.
Hotwire Taps Nokia for a North Carolina Build
Hotwire Communications has selected Nokia to build a next-generation network in North Carolina, a contract announced on Wednesday. The deployment will use the Nokia 7750 Service Router, and Nokia says the network is being readied for the demands of AI computing clusters. Commercial operation is expected in early 2027 — a confirmed order, though the switch-on date remains a forecast rather than a completed milestone.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
Traffic Report Points to an AI-Heavy Decade
Nokia also used Wednesday to publish its "Global Network Traffic Report," a long-range outlook on worldwide network usage. The company expects artificial intelligence to drive a 44% share of global data traffic by 2035, with total monthly traffic projected at nearly 3,789 exabytes. Those figures describe Nokia's expectations for how networks will be used, not volumes already achieved — a distinction worth keeping in mind given the decade-long horizon, which sits well beyond the early-2027 timeline for the Hotwire build.
Revenue Climbs, but Cash Conversion Guidance Slips
For the third quarter of 2026, Nokia reported net sales of EUR 5.15 billion, up 10% year on year. Comparable operating profit came in at EUR 605 million. The company left its full-year comparable operating profit forecast unchanged at a range of EUR 2.1 billion to EUR 2.6 billion.
The guidance on free cash flow relative to comparable operating profit, however, was lowered to a range of 35% to 55%. Nokia also said it plans an additional EUR 400 million of investment in working capital for 2026. The unchanged profit outlook therefore arrives alongside a reduced expectation for how much of that profit will convert into free cash — a combination that leaves the earnings story intact while softening the cash-generation picture.
Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
For investors, the session offered a split screen: an upgrade and a fresh contract on one side, a cautious liquidity signal and a tech-wide selloff on the other.
