Nokia's Turnaround Narrative Gains Traction as Credit Outlook Improves and Portfolio Slims Down

The market's mood toward Nokia shifted decisively on Monday, with the Finnish telecom equipment maker's shares climbing 3.4 percent to EUR 8.20, building on a Friday close of EUR 7.93. The move marks a tentative stabilization after weeks of turbulence that had knocked the stock well off its June peak.
Investors had multiple reasons to reassess the company's prospects. A ratings agency upgrade, a fresh institutional stake, and a strategic portfolio cleanup all landed within days of each other, giving the stock a rare confluence of positive catalysts.
S&P Sees Brighter Skies Ahead
S&P Global provided a notable endorsement on July 30, lifting its outlook on Nokia from "stable" to "positive" while affirming the BBB- rating. The agency pointed to the company's successful diversification and surging demand for network infrastructure from AI and cloud customers as key drivers behind the revision.
The ratings firm projects growth of roughly 10 to 15 percent in Nokia's network infrastructure segment through 2027, fueled by the insatiable data appetite of major cloud providers. S&P even flagged the possibility of a one-notch upgrade within the next 24 months.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nokia?
Strategic Slimming Takes Shape
Management is simultaneously executing a portfolio rationalization that underscores its pivot toward higher-margin businesses. Nokia has reclassified its Fixed Wireless Access (FWA) CPE operations and the Enterprise Campus Edge division as discontinued operations. A binding agreement is already in place for the FWA-CPE sale, while the Enterprise Campus Edge unit is expected to follow.
The reclassification tightens the company's full-year guidance for comparable operating profit to a range of EUR 2.1 billion to EUR 2.6 billion. The strategic logic is clear: concentrate resources on AI and cloud infrastructure where margins are more attractive.
Restructuring costs for 2026 are projected at roughly EUR 800 million, encompassing the integration of the China joint venture and new efficiency programs across Europe. These measures are designed to support the profit margin targets management has set for 2028.
New Money Flows In
Adding to the constructive narrative, Militia Capital Management disclosed a new position of 300,000 Nokia shares, valued at approximately USD 2.41 million. The institutional entry comes as retail investors on platforms like Stocktwits debate whether the sharp July correction has run its course.
The order book provides tangible evidence of momentum. Nokia secured EUR 2.8 billion in new orders from AI and cloud customers during the second quarter, with roughly half expected to convert into revenue within the next twelve months. Revenue from AI and cloud clients grew 105 percent year-over-year in the quarter.
AI-RAN Ambitions
Nokia is positioning its AI-native radio access network platform as a competitive differentiator, marketing it as the industry's first commercial AI-RAN offering, developed in collaboration with Nvidia. The technology embeds artificial intelligence directly into the radio network to improve energy efficiency and handle expanding AI data volumes.
Early adopters are already deploying the technology. The recently extended 5G agreement with Taiwan Mobile incorporates AI software solutions, including MantaRay SON and Predictive Hardware Analytics, to modernize and automate network operations.
Nokia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Dividend Date Approaches
Shareholders have a near-term date to mark on their calendars. Nokia pays a quarterly dividend of EUR 0.04 per share on August 6, 2026, with the record date having passed on July 28. The payment forms part of a total distribution of up to EUR 0.14 per share for fiscal 2025, approved at the annual meeting in April. Management retains authorization for up to EUR 0.06 per share in additional distributions.
Technical Crossroads
The chart tells a story of both damage and potential recovery. The stock remains 45.22 percent below its June high of EUR 14.97, and the 14-day RSI of 36.9 suggests the shares are emerging from oversold conditions. The 200-day moving average at EUR 7.94 now represents a critical inflection point — Monday's close above that level offers a tentative signal that the longer-term trend may be stabilizing.
Year-to-date performance remains strongly positive at 43.26 percent despite a 28.24 percent pullback over the past month. Whether the combination of portfolio discipline, AI order momentum, and an improving credit profile can sustain the recovery above that key technical level will determine if the current bounce becomes something more durable.
