Novo Nordisk has moved to deepen its early-stage research capabilities, securing a non-exclusive license to Ablexis's AlivaMab-Mouse platforms. The Danish drugmaker disclosed the arrangement a day after Ablexis announced it, with neither side revealing the financial terms. The technology is intended to sharpen antibody discovery and bolster capacity in the earliest phases of development.

The deal slots into a broader effort to push the product portfolio beyond its established core therapies. Roughly two weeks earlier, Novo Nordisk locked up exclusive rights outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan to develop, manufacture and commercialize the oral GLP-1/GIP candidate HRS-1596 under a licensing pact with Hengrui Pharmaceuticals. That agreement carried a $300 million upfront payment, with potential milestone payments that could lift the total to as much as $2.6 billion, plus future royalties. The Ablexis tie-up is meant to add further avenues at the antibody-development level.

A Second Front in India

While the pipeline work proceeds, Novo Nordisk is also laying the groundwork to open fresh sales channels for its diabetes and weight-loss medicines. Vikrant Shrotriya, managing director of Novo Nordisk India, expects the country's GLP-1 market to expand by 15% to 20% annually, according to media reports. An oral obesity therapy is slated to reach the Indian market around mid-2027, though that timeline hinges on regulatory clearance.

Injectables still dominate the global treatment landscape for obesity and type-2 diabetes, which makes the shift toward an oral delivery format a significant milestone in pharmaceutical development — one that could reach wider patient groups and improve adherence. The mid-2027 target also lays bare the long regulatory lead times that govern the international pharma business, with the plans tied to the progress of review procedures until authorities grant approval.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Analysts Trim Targets as US Share Slips

Emerging-market prospects carry more weight against an increasingly contested competitive backdrop. On October 12, BMO Capital analyst Evan Seigerman cut his price target on Novo Nordisk to $40 from $47 while keeping a Market Perform rating. The firm pointed to a demanding comparison base ahead of third-quarter results and to declining US market share. In BMO's view, the market still underestimates the potential of the injectable Wegovy HD, whereas the outlook for the tablet form of Wegovy is already adequately priced in.

Citi struck a more cautious tone on longer-term earnings on October 9, lowering its price target to 296 Danish kroner from 310 and maintaining a Neutral rating. The analysts cited limited room for further margin growth, according to media reports. The bank raised some estimates for 2026 and 2027 but trimmed its expectations for longer-term profit growth in return.

Buyback Support Versus a Bruising Year

Management is underpinning the stock through a steady repurchase program. About a week ago, Novo Nordisk reported the acquisition of 37,849,179 B shares, bringing total spending under the buyback since February 4, 2026 to 10,558,876,422 DKK. The overall program has a ceiling of up to 15 billion DKK.

The shares have been searching for a floor. On Thursday the stock traded at EUR 34.60, up 1.4%, while a separate session saw it add 3.2% to EUR 35.23, with no company announcement offering a direct trigger for that day's gain. Even so, investors are nursing losses: the equity is down 20% year-to-date by one count and 21% by another.
