Novo Nordisk's Buyback Sprint Leaves Little Room to Maneuver as Brokers Turn Cautious

Novo Nordisk has now committed more than two-thirds of the firepower earmarked for its current share repurchase program, a disclosure that landed Monday alongside a fresh round of broker pessimism and an unresolved regulatory question mark over one of its pipeline candidates.
DKK 10.25 Billion Deployed Since February
Between September 28 and October 2 alone, the Danish drugmaker picked up 1,225,000 of its own B-shares for a combined DKK 307.4 million. Those purchases lifted the cumulative tally since the program's February 4 launch to 36,604,179 B-shares, acquired at an average price of DKK 279.95 apiece, for a total transaction value of DKK 10,247,270,869.
With a ceiling of up to DKK 15 billion set for the twelve-month window running through early February 2026, the company has burned through roughly two-thirds of its allotted capital in about eight months. The pace underscores management's intent to return cash to shareholders and cushion the stock during a stretch of market volatility.
Deutsche Bank Trims Target, Keeps Sell Rating
Not everyone is comforted by the buyback. On Wednesday, Deutsche Bank Research lowered its price target on the Danish pharmaceutical group from DKK 245 to DKK 225 while maintaining a "Sell" rating. The downgrade followed what analysts described as mildly negative takeaways and signals from this year's EASD diabetes conference, which they see as adding further downward pressure on the company's valuation.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Citi took a less severe stance, nudging its target from DKK 310 down to DKK 296 and sticking with a "Neutral" call. The US bank cited largely stable margin prospects through 2030 and modestly reduced its estimates for adjusted operating profit.
FDA Extends Denecimig Review Over Manufacturing Fixes
Adding to the uncertainty, US regulators have stretched out their review of Denecimig, Novo Nordisk's investigational treatment for hemophilia A. The FDA's decision stems from outstanding remediation work at a production facility rather than any clinical shortcomings — the agency raised no concerns about efficacy or safety. No revised decision timeline was provided.
Management has stressed that the holdup will not affect its financial guidance for 2026, and the company still aims for a US market launch in the first half of 2027 if approval comes through.

Ozempic Data Offers a Counterweight
On the clinical front, Novo Nordisk reported results showing that escalating the Ozempic dose to two milligrams in adults with type-2 diabetes produced a statistically significant six percent lower risk of major cardiovascular events compared with switching patients to Eli Lilly's rival Mounjaro. The finding offers a measure of encouragement as competition in diabetes and obesity care remains fierce, with long-term profitability hinging on the company's ability to defend margins and bring new treatment options to market.
Shares closed Friday at EUR 34.40, a gain of 1.3 percent on the day. Despite the ongoing buyback support, the stock has shed 22 percent since the start of the year.
