Citi trims Novo Nordisk price target to 296 DKK, keeping Neutral, as buybacks near their cap and the FDA extends its Denecimig review.

Citi lowered its price target on Novo Nordisk from 310 DKK to 296 DKK on Friday, keeping a "Neutral" rating on the Danish drugmaker. The broker's more cautious stance rests on limited prospects for margin expansion through 2030 — a revision that captures how sober the market has become about the company's medium-term earnings power.

That restraint is visible in the share price. The stock closed Friday at EUR 34.40, up 1.3% on the day, but it remains down 22% since the start of the year. Novo Nordisk was long regarded as one of the most dynamic growth names in European healthcare on the strength of its GLP-1 franchise. Mounting competitive pressure and heavy spending on global manufacturing capacity have since pushed observers to recalibrate, with worries about a flattening profitability curve weighing on sentiment.

Buyback Program Nears Its Ceiling

Management has been leaning on capital returns to support the stock. Under a program running twelve months from February 4, 2026, Novo Nordisk has committed to repurchasing up to 15 billion DKK of its own shares. Between September 28 and October 2, the company bought back 1,225,000 B-shares for 307,428,837 DKK.

Cumulatively, from the program's launch through October 2, Novo Nordisk has repurchased 36,604,179 B-shares at a total transaction value of 10,247,270,869 DKK. The bulk of the authorized funds has therefore already been deployed to retire stock via the exchange.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

FDA Extends Denecimig Review on Plant Remediation

Regulatory matters have moved more slowly. Roughly two weeks ago, the US Food and Drug Administration told Novo Nordisk that its review of Denecimig, a treatment for hemophilia A, would take longer than expected. The holdup stems from remediation work at a manufacturing site. The agency has not provided a new decision date, though it flagged no deficiencies in the submitted clinical data on the drug's efficacy or safety.

Novo Nordisk said the delay does not affect its financial outlook for 2026. Subject to a successful approval, the company is targeting a US market launch in the first half of 2027.

Wegovy Data and a Fresh Pipeline Deal

On the research front, Novo Nordisk presented new findings at the European diabetes congress EASD 2026. An analysis showed that Wegovy normalized liver-fat levels in nine out of ten adults with obesity and fatty liver disease. Separate data from the OCTANE study found that patients who switched from injectable GLP-1 therapies to the Wegovy pill lost an average of 4.1% of body weight after three months, provided they stayed on treatment.

For CagriSema, Novo Nordisk reported favorable effects on organ and bone metrics as well as a reduction in food cravings. Earlier in October, at the annual meeting of the European Association for the Study of Diabetes, the company also presented data showing the candidate alters the brain's response to high-calorie food cues and measurably improves eating behavior — a central pillar in Novo Nordisk's effort to defend its lead in obesity therapies into the next generation of medicines.

The pipeline gained further depth through a licensing deal with Hengrui Pharma for the candidate HRS-1596. The agreement grants the Danes exclusive rights to develop, manufacture and commercialize the asset outside mainland China, Hong Kong, Macau and Taiwan.

Between operational pipeline hopes and regulatory waiting periods, the question of long-term profitability remains the decisive factor for the stock.
