Novo Nordisk's Oral Wegovy Faces a French Shelf-Space Test as BMO Lifts Its Target
Published on 11/08/2026 at 16:02 | Editorial boerse-global.deNovo Nordisk's push into oral obesity treatment is running into a decidedly unglamorous obstacle in France: getting the pill onto pharmacy shelves at all. A report published by La Dépêche found that none of the three pharmacies its journalists visited could supply the drug, with several saying they wanted to gauge demand before placing orders. The daily tablet, positioned as an alternative to the weekly injection, thus depends as much on stocking decisions and patient willingness to pay as on clinical merit.
Money is the second gate. La Dépêche cites a recommended price of EUR 169 per month for the oral version, though the actual figure can vary by pharmacy, and France's national health insurance does not reimburse it. Patients must therefore cover the cost themselves — a constraint on volumes as long as willingness to pay trails medical interest. Pharmacists' caution compounds the access hurdle.
The injectable tells a different story. Roughly 100,000 patients in France already use the Wegovy shot, evidence that demand for the franchise exists. Whether the tablet adds to that base or merely shifts patients from needle to pill is the commercial question. Early signals lean toward expansion: more than 3 million prescriptions had been written by June, and over 80% went to people who had not previously taken a GLP-1 medicine. Novo Nordisk benefits only if those newcomers stay on treatment; pure switches from the injection promise far less incremental business.
Analysts Diverge After Quarterly Update
The access debate forms the backdrop to a split in sell-side opinion. BMO Capital raised its price target on Novo Nordisk to $44 from $40 on Thursday while keeping a "Market Perform" rating, with analyst Evan Seigerman pointing to Wegovy pill sales running above consensus estimates, according to media reports. He simultaneously questioned whether that momentum can be sustained through 2027. UBS moved the other way the same day, cutting its target to DKK 312.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?
Both revisions followed Wednesday's third-quarter 2026 results, when Novo Nordisk reported adjusted revenue growth of 4% at constant currencies and a 27% rise in adjusted operating profit on the same basis. Management lifted its full-year outlook on expectations of higher GLP-1 sales, guiding to a range of -2% to +2% at constant exchange rates for both adjusted revenue and adjusted operating profit growth.
Competitive Pressure in the U.S.
In the American market, Novo Nordisk faces a formidable rival. Eli Lilly claimed a 63% share of the market for incretin-based treatments, diabetes included, in the third quarter of 2026. Cheaper compounded versions made up in pharmacies add a further layer of competition. A Gallup survey illustrates the stakes: 11% of U.S. adults said they use GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, and of those, 18% used compounded preparations while 66% used branded medicines.
Liver Data and a Busy Conference Calendar
Elsewhere in the pipeline, Novo Nordisk on Friday presented retrospective observational studies in adults with MASH at the AASLD Liver Meeting. The results linked semaglutide to improvements in weight, liver enzymes and blood sugar, though the company stressed the studies cannot establish a causal relationship. In one comparison, average weight loss after six months was 18.9 pounds on semaglutide versus 5.6 pounds for users of resmetirom.
Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
Novo Nordisk has also announced data across 26 abstracts for ObesityWeek 2026, running from 14 to 17 November 2026 in Washington, D.C. The presentations will include analyses of CagriSema and findings from real-world use of Wegovy.
For investors, the French pharmacy report distills the operational task facing the tablet: a product that interests patients only becomes durable growth once supply and financing line up.
