Novo Nordisk's Wegovy Pill Strategy Hits a French Pharmacy Wall as Analysts Split on Valuation

Novo Nordisk's push to broaden access to its oral Wegovy faces a decidedly uneven reception. A report published today by La Dépêche found that none of the three pharmacies visited in France could actually supply the drug — a stark illustration of how distribution and affordability, rather than clinical demand alone, will shape the pill's commercial trajectory.

Shelf Space Awaits Patients, Not the Other Way Around

Several pharmacists told the newspaper they intend to wait for demand to materialize before placing orders. The once-daily tablet offers an alternative to the weekly injection, but its success hinges on patients showing enough interest and pharmacies building corresponding inventory.

Financing adds a second hurdle. La Dépêche cites a recommended price of EUR 169 per month for the oral version, though the actual figure can vary by pharmacy. France's national health insurance does not reimburse the product, leaving patients to cover the recurring cost themselves — a constraint on uptake as long as willingness to pay trails medical interest. The reluctance described among individual pharmacies only deepens that access barrier.

The injectable form tells a different story: roughly 100,000 patients in France already use the shot, evidence of underlying demand for Wegovy. Whether the tablet can reach additional patients who prefer oral treatment — and can afford it — will be the deciding factor.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Novo Nordisk?

Prescription Data Point to Genuine Market Expansion

Early uptake of the pill offers reason for optimism. More than 3 million prescriptions were recorded through June, with over 80% going to people who had not previously taken a GLP-1 drug. For Novo Nordisk, that is a favorable signal provided those patients stay on treatment. Broad recruitment of new users would strengthen the tablet's growth case, whereas simple switches from the injection promise less incremental business.

Competition in the U.S. complicates the picture. Eli Lilly claimed a 63% share of the market for incretin-based treatments, including diabetes, in the third quarter of 2026. Cheaper compounded versions made in pharmacies add further pressure. A Gallup survey underscores how relevant that alternative has become: 11% of American adults said they use GLP-1 drugs for weight loss, and of those, 18% used compounded preparations while 66% used branded medications.

Two Price Targets, One Cautious Stance

Against that operational backdrop, sell-side analysts delivered a mixed verdict this week. Bernstein Research raised its price target on Novo Nordisk to DKK 223 from DKK 203 on Friday, according to media reports, while keeping its "Underperform" rating — a combination that pairs a higher valuation floor with continued restraint on the stock. BMO Capital lifted its target on the Novo Nordisk ADR to $44 from $40 on Thursday, maintaining a "Market Perform" rating. Analyst Evan Seigerman pointed to the strength of the Wegovy pill, with further opportunities for 2027 depending on continued growth of the tablet, international business development and a successful launch of CagriSema.

Other analyst actions on Thursday and Wednesday painted a mixed picture: two firms raised their price targets and another cut its own, with ratings unchanged in each case.

Asia Rollout, a Terminated Partnership and a Data Calendar

On the corporate front, Novo Nordisk and Abbott announced an expanded collaboration in the Asia-Pacific region on Thursday, aiming to widen access to original semaglutide for people with type 2 diabetes through the introduction of Plosbrio — a planned build-out of diabetes care offerings in the region.

Novo Nordisk at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Elsewhere, Novo Nordisk has moved to end a different partnership. The company informed Korro Bio on Tuesday that it was terminating their research collaboration and license agreement, with the cancellation set to take effect on February 1, 2027, according to a subsequent Korro regulatory disclosure.

Next on the calendar is ObesityWeek 2026, where Novo Nordisk plans to present data from its obesity portfolio across 26 abstracts. The event is scheduled for November 14–17 in Washington, D.C.

For Novo Nordisk, product interest only becomes durable growth when supply and financing line up. The French pharmacy report makes that operational task plain: the tablet has to be available for patients who are willing to pay for it.
