NRx Pharmaceuticals has secured FDA approval for its preservative-free ketamine injection, with the regulator clearing the product ahead of its November 10 target action date. The decision, announced Thursday, means commercial batches already sitting in inventory can now be labeled and shipped to U.S. clinics and hospitals — moving the conversation for shareholders from regulatory risk to execution.

The stock rose 9.1% in premarket trading on the news. The approval opens the door to supplying a market that has faced persistent shortages, though it is distinct from the company's separate development programs targeting depression and suicidality.

Inventory Ready, Shipments Still Pending

NRx has been laying the groundwork for a commercial launch for weeks. On October 19, the company reported completing three validation batches of its commercial manufacturing process, with stockpiles set aside for commercial supply contingent on the abbreviated new drug application (ANDA) clearing the FDA. That release explicitly tied production readiness to the pending regulatory step.

Manufacturing is handled alongside Nephron Pharmaceuticals in West Columbia, South Carolina, using blow-fill-seal technology. According to NRx, the existing product still needs to be labeled before it can reach medical facilities — a reminder that launch readiness is not the same as product already in transit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying NRX Pharmaceuticals?

The company also submitted two-year room-temperature stability data showing no deterioration in purity, potency, or sterility, and expects the results to support a labeled shelf life of at least three years.

What the Approval Covers — and What It Doesn't

The scope of the green light matters for how investors read it. CEO Jonathan Javitt said the product carries the same labeling as Ketalar and is currently cleared solely for anesthesia. Thursday's decision is not an approval for treating depression or suicidal ideation.

For those indications, NRx is pursuing a separate NDA for intravenous ketamine under the designation NRX-100, drawing on existing NIH studies, data licensed from French health authorities, and U.S. real-world data from Osmind. That pathway remains independent of the generic application just approved.

Also still open is the company's FDA citizen petition seeking removal of BZT-containing ketamine products from the market. Approval of NRx's own preservative-free formulation does not mean the agency has ruled on competing preparations. The absence of benzethonium chloride, or BZT — a preservative NRx says is found in currently available ketamine injections — is the product's central differentiator.

Ketamine injections have appeared on the FDA's shortage list since 2018, so an additional supply source could help ease constraints.

NRX Pharmaceuticals at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Labeling Feedback and a December Meeting

Roughly two weeks before the approval, NRx disclosed FDA feedback on the preservative-free ketamine's labeling: the agency requested minor changes and sample labels bearing the proposed product name, which was itself still under review. The company had named November 10, 2026 as the GDUFA target date for the ANDA.

Separately, a mandatory filing dated October 16 set the annual shareholder meeting for December 17, 2026. The gathering will be virtual-only, with a record date of October 28 for voting eligibility.

With the regulatory hurdle now cleared, the question for investors is how quickly NRx converts its stated launch readiness into actual shipments. Broader expectations around psychiatric uses or the displacement of BZT-containing products remain separate storylines.
