Nvidia's Cheap Multiple Is Real — So Is the Earnings Bet Behind It
Published on 10/24/2026 at 20:31 | Editorial boerse-global.deNvidia's forward valuation has slipped well below its own five-year norm, a gap that looks like a bargain only if the profit forecasts underneath it hold. A valuation analysis published today puts the price-to-earnings ratio for fiscal 2027 at 23, against a five-year average of 33.4. The discount is genuine. Whether it constitutes a margin of safety is a separate question, because the multiple rests on earnings that have not yet arrived.
The operating record so far gives the bulls something to work with. Revenue climbed 96% to $177.8 billion in the first half of fiscal 2027, meaning the stock is not priced on a distant breakthrough alone but on a business already expanding at a furious clip. Analysts project earnings growth of 71% for Nvidia next year; the equivalent expectation across the S&P 500 sits at 16%. That divergence explains why a multiple built on future profits can look far lower than one drawn from results already booked. The direction of the arithmetic matters: it is the lofty estimates that push the multiple down, not the low multiple that conjures the profits. Anyone using the ratio as a verdict has to audit the assumptions inside it.
Two Forces Pulling in Opposite Directions
Set that against the mood in the market this week. AI stocks came under broad pressure on Thursday, with worries about the cost and financing of new data centers joined by concerns over oil prices and geopolitical risk. Nvidia's decline was part of a wider move rather than a verdict on the company itself. Reports also flagged a weaker outlook from Lam Research and Tesla's reduced investment target for 2026 as contributing weights — separate companies, but a shared thickening of skepticism about the pace and financial sustainability of the AI build-out.
Chip names recovered in pre-market trading yesterday, though no single corporate announcement accounted for the bounce. Nvidia closed Friday at €188.52, leaving the broader unease intact despite the intraday rebound. The distinction matters for interpretation: the reports describe doubts about how the infrastructure expansion gets funded. They do not document any financing difficulty at Nvidia itself.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?
A Deployment Calendar That Keeps Filling
On the operational side, the announcements keep coming. Google Cloud and Nvidia unveiled new A5X instances on Wednesday, built on Nvidia's Vera Rubin NVL72 infrastructure, with general availability slated for November. That is a concrete next delivery step arriving while the market debates whether the investments can pay for themselves.
Beyond the data center, Nvidia said Wednesday that Volvo Cars will adopt its Hyperion and Alpamayo stacks. Bolt has selected the Alpamayo stack for a European robotaxi program, with real-world driving data collection in Madrid planned for 2027, subject to regulatory approval. In health care, Nvidia and the Institute for Protein Design at UW Medicine introduced RFD4-Proteina, an open protein design model, alongside collaborations with Siemens Healthineers on adaptive radiation therapy and with life-science organizations.
Those projects demonstrate the breadth of what has been announced. They are not the same as realized business results — and that gap is precisely where investor tension lives, as tangible technological progress meets a market that has grown more demanding about financing and execution.
Customers Building Their Own Roads
Competition adds a second front. Amazon has introduced a software tool that lets its Trainium AI chips run code in the most widely used AI programming language without modification. Alphabet now sells its own AI chips directly to enterprises. Neither move signals an imminent loss of Nvidia's position — Amazon still buys Nvidia chips — but it reminds investors to watch the competitiveness of individual offerings, not just aggregate AI demand. A growing market does not guarantee unchanged share.
The next hard checkpoint is the quarterly report on November 18. For the third quarter of fiscal 2027, Nvidia has guided toward revenue of $108 billion at the midpoint. That gives the valuation debate something to test against: not just the revenue reported, but the signals about demand ahead. A lower multiple is an argument for the stock. It is not a substitute for proof that the business can keep meeting expectations this high.
