The company that has spent two years managing scarcity of its own GPUs now finds itself at the mercy of its suppliers. DRAM and HBM prices are spiraling, and Nvidia has quietly told major customers to expect server price increases of more than 15 percent for systems powered by its Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin platforms, with the new pricing taking effect on units shipping in early 2027. The culprit, according to reports, is the exploding cost of the memory chips that sit alongside Nvidia's processors.

Industry analysts have already coined a term for the moment: "RAMageddon." Contract prices for DRAM are forecast to jump 58 to 63 percent quarter-over-quarter in Q2 2026, following a surge of more than 90 percent in the first quarter. The knock-on effect is rippling through every AI server bill of materials, and even Nvidia is scrambling to adapt — reportedly testing reduced memory configurations for its upcoming Rubin Ultra GPU as a stopgap measure to keep supply chains moving.

A Chipmaker Turned Financier

The memory crunch lands at an awkward moment for Nvidia, which has been expanding its footprint across the entire AI infrastructure stack — from data centers to project financing. The company's response to the shortage is only part of a broader strategy that has transformed it from a pure-play chip vendor into something closer to an ecosystem backstop.

The most striking example unfolded in Ohio, where Nvidia has committed to backing a data center project developed by SoftBank's SB Energy for OpenAI. The numbers have shifted through several iterations over the past two weeks. Initial discussions reportedly involved guarantees as high as $250 billion, before being revised down to under $120 billion. By mid-August, Reuters reported that Nvidia would provide OpenAI with a guarantee of up to $105 billion for leasing the facility, alongside a direct $1.5 billion investment in SB Energy. In exchange, Nvidia becomes the exclusive chip supplier for the site.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

The deal is part of a much larger financing architecture. On August 10, Nvidia signed letters of intent with six financial heavyweights — Apollo, BlackRock, Blackstone, Brookfield, Goldman Sachs and KKR — to mobilize more than $500 billion for AI infrastructure. CEO Jensen Huang said on X that Nvidia could back up to $125 billion of that total itself, a quarter of the entire sum. Just days later, Goldman Sachs was already in talks with additional investors about joining the vehicle.

The pattern is consistent: Nvidia secures future demand by helping to finance the very data centers that will ultimately buy its chips. Whether that reads as shrewd capital allocation or a sign of an industry propping up its own demand is a matter of perspective — the two interpretations are not mutually exclusive.

Regulatory Tailwinds and a China Balancing Act

The financing push has also received a helping hand from Washington. The SEC has eased risk-retention requirements for data center securitizations, a regulatory adjustment that removes a significant hurdle for the kind of large-scale compute financing platforms Nvidia is building with its partners.

On the geopolitical front, Nvidia continues to navigate a delicate path. Chinese regulators have approved the import of roughly 20,000 H200 chips for ByteDance and Tencent — 10,000 units each — under the strict condition that the hardware remains in data centers in Hong Kong. It is a compromise that underscores how Nvidia's business sits at the intersection of technological demand and political oversight.

Not every rumor has gone Nvidia's way. On August 20, the company denied a report from The Information claiming it planned to release a China-specific language processor by year-end. Nvidia stated that no such unit is on its roadmap and that it has no current LPU sales in China.

The Market's Measured Response

For all the moving parts, the stock market's reaction has been notably restrained. Nvidia shares closed Friday at €183.78, down 1.1 percent on the day and 5.5 percent on the week. The stock sits 9.2 percent below its 52-week high of €202.50, reached in mid-May, though it remains up about 15 percent year-to-date. The RSI at 48.1 suggests neither overbought nor oversold conditions — investors appear to be pricing in the memory-driven price increases and the financing commitments without panic.

The longer-term question is whether Nvidia can sustain its dual role as both supplier and financier of the same demand without the two roles eventually colliding. Higher server prices may support margins in the near term, but they also push costs onto cloud providers and AI companies that must ultimately absorb the increase. How the memory market evolves over the coming quarters will likely determine whether this particular mechanism holds — and whether Nvidia's expansion into every corner of the AI economy proves to be its greatest strength or its most complicated liability.
