Nvidia's Valuation Upgrade Meets a Shrinking China Footprint

Arete lifted its Nvidia target to $369 from $283, a valuation call that sits alongside IDC data showing Nvidia's China AI chip share at 34% in H1 2026.

Arete Research raised its price target on Nvidia to $369 from $283 on Friday, according to media reports — a fresh vote of confidence in the stock's valuation at a moment when the chipmaker's business in China is contracting sharply. The two developments pull in opposite directions, and investors would do well to keep them apart: one is an analyst's assessment of what the shares are worth, the other is hard evidence about how much product Nvidia is actually moving in a key market.

The revision concerns the stock's valuation, not a new revenue or earnings forecast from the company itself. That distinction matters, because the operating picture emerging from China offers a counterweight to the more bullish target.

China: fewer chips, smaller share

Reuters reported on October 13, citing IDC, that Nvidia's share of China's data-center AI chip market fell to 34% in the first half of 2026. Shipments totaled 678,000 accelerators, down 44% year over year. The weakness therefore goes beyond relative market position — the absolute number of units delivered also declined. A more optimistic valuation and falling shipments can coexist, but the analyst move does not erase the operational finding.

Stakes, grants and a broader platform

Alongside the China data, Nvidia has been busy on other fronts. Reuters reported that on October 13 the company agreed to acquire stakes in the French start-ups Doctolib and Genesis AI. The Doctolib holding is a minority stake; Genesis AI confirmed Nvidia as a strategic investor, with the terms of the investment undisclosed. These are equity arrangements, and no quantified contribution to Nvidia's results can be derived from them.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Nvidia?

Research commitments tell a similar story of breadth rather than immediate revenue. On Wednesday, Nvidia pledged computing resources worth $250 million over five years to support British research into the safety of agentic AI, with access worth $50 million annually. The intended research partners include the Oxford-led BOLD project, the UCL-led SOFAIR project and Imperial College London. The commitment is a donation of compute, not an announced cash disbursement.

It also fits into a wider pattern. On October 8, Nvidia had already announced support pledges worth $1 billion for science and research in the United States, likewise spread over five years, covering fields including quantum computing, healthcare and energy security. The British program is narrower in focus — safety and protection of agentic AI — while the American effort spans multiple scientific applications.

From the fab floor to the laptop

The platform itself keeps expanding into new territory. Nvidia said Wednesday that semiconductor companies are using its CUDA-X libraries for chip development and manufacturing, and it introduced cuPotential, a library for AI-driven simulation of atoms and molecules. Early tests with cuPotential achieved a two- to threefold speedup, according to the company, while Lam Research used NanoVDB to run a simulation of chip manufacturing 30 times faster. Those figures refer to specific tests and applications, not a general performance guarantee.

Nvidia at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Friday brought the start of sales for RTX Spark notebooks and an expanded collaboration with Mercedes-Benz — two more routes for Nvidia's technology, in Windows PCs and in driver assistance and automated driving.

For investors, the takeaway is a matter of categories. Product availability, industrial deployment and research funding represent different kinds of progress. The British compute pledge strengthens the research base for safe AI agents; it is neither a sales order nor a revenue forecast. And the higher Arete target is a valuation expectation, not proof that an operational improvement has already arrived.
