ESA picked OHB for a nine-month study on a European low Earth orbit station, as the Bremen group logs launches and a new rocket CEO.

Europe's push for strategic autonomy in space has handed Bremen-based OHB SE a seat at the head table. On 29 September, the European Space Agency (ESA) awarded two parallel preliminary studies for a future European outpost in low Earth orbit. Alongside a consortium led by Airbus Defence and Space, OHB won a mandate to spend roughly nine months laying the groundwork for such a station.

The contract is more than a concept paper for OHB. It signals that the group is now operating on equal footing with established aerospace heavyweights in shaping the next generation of orbital infrastructure — a positioning that matters as existing stations near retirement and geopolitical pressure mounts for independent European capacity in orbit.

A busy stretch across the group

The ESA win is only the latest in a dense run of operational milestones. Roughly a week earlier, subsidiary OHB Italia wrapped up the Eaglet-II constellation for Italy's IRIDE Earth-observation program, with the launch of eight additional satellites bringing the network to 24 units in orbit. The Italian arm handled development, integration and testing of the spacecraft and now also runs their operations.

Almost simultaneously, the ATHENE-1 small satellite from subsidiary LuxSpace lifted off aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, departing from Vandenberg for a low Earth orbit. The platform, built with the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, carries 22 scientific experiments, with a focus on new satellite communication methods, navigation and AI-driven data processing in orbit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

At rocket subsidiary Rocket Factory Augsburg, the supervisory board installed Alexander Dahm as CEO roughly a week ago. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Indulis Kalnins and is tasked with pushing operational maturity and preparing the maiden flight of the RFA ONE small launcher.

Management stays upbeat on orders

OHB's leadership continues to project a robust order intake for the current financial year, underpinned by the string of technology projects being driven forward across its subsidiaries. In the European space sector, the Bremen group is holding its ground with a range of ventures spanning Earth observation and data processing.

Investors will get fresh insight into the operating earnings picture at the next reporting date. On 12 November 2026, OHB SE publishes its interim report for the first nine months and will walk through the key figures in an earnings presentation.

A stock caught between vision and valuation

The share price has yet to reflect the operational momentum. The stock closed Friday's session at EUR 158.40, and media reports point to a continued consolidation following the prior advance. Despite a gain of 35 percent since the start of the year, the shares sit 40 percent below their 200-day moving average.

That gap leaves investors weighing visionary space plans against the sober reality of day-to-day valuation. Building space stations and launch vehicles unfolds over multi-year cycles, while the market demands near-term confirmation — and has been punishing the euphoria that came before.

For anyone watching European space, patience is the price of admission. ESA's decisions sketch out the long-term direction of travel, but whether OHB can defend its technological claim in the markets will only be settled once the major orbital projects move from blueprint to execution.
