A renewed appetite for European defence exposure lifted OHB SE shares by 11% to EUR 192.00 on Friday, with the Bremen space and technology group increasingly being priced as a security-industrial play rather than a pure space pioneer. The trigger came from Morgan Stanley's read on forthcoming allocations in the German federal budget due at year-end, which reignited interest across the sector.

The rally caps a strong run: the stock has gained 64% since the start of the year, though it still trades well below earlier highs.

IRIS² anchors the medium-term order book

Underpinning OHB's medium-term workload is the major contract for Europe's IRIS² satellite network, secured in the third quarter. The order is worth just under EUR 1 billion and covers the manufacture of 18 satellite platforms. Further opportunities are taking shape in the institutional and security-related sphere, with the Sentinel contract drawing closer and the SATCOMBw 4 programme on the horizon.

Those programmes reflect the group's firm footing in strategic European ventures. Demand for autonomous European capabilities is growing in both civilian telecommunications and sovereign missions, strengthening the Bremen-based company's position in upcoming tender rounds.

NuWays puts the potential volume of the Bundeswehr's SATCOMBw 4 programme — expected in the first half of 2027 — at between EUR 5 billion and EUR 7 billion. The figures are estimates rather than secured orders, but their scale explains why the market is absorbing every budgetary signal. Reuters reported that EU heads of state and government reaffirmed their support for Ukraine, while discussions about bottlenecks in military satellite communications have underscored the strategic value of European providers.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

Science and technology demonstrations run in parallel

Alongside the large-scale programmes, OHB is pushing ahead with scientific work. On Thursday the company launched the EO4TIPP project together with the Alfred Wegener Institute and the University of Exeter. The two-year study, commissioned by the European Space Agency, aims to design Earth observation systems for the early detection of climate tipping points; the partners include subsidiary OHB Sweden. Work of this kind bolsters OHB's scientific reputation and secures baseline utilisation, though on its own it is hardly enough to justify dramatic share-price moves.

Concrete technology trials in orbit complement the research. Roughly two weeks ago, the ATHENE-1 demonstrator reached low Earth orbit as planned aboard a Falcon 9 during the Transporter-18 mission. The system was developed by subsidiary OHB LuxSpace together with the University of the Bundeswehr Munich.

There has also been a change at the top of subsidiary Rocket Factory Augsburg, where Alexander Dahm took over the CEO role from Indulis Kalnins around two weeks ago.

Analysts see plenty of headroom

Brokerage opinion points to more upside than the current valuation implies. On 12 October, Berenberg kept its "Buy" rating with a EUR 358 price target; analyst Chris Armstrong named OHB one of six particularly promising European equities, citing the foreseeable rise in defence and space spending in Germany and at European level. NuWays reaffirmed its own buy recommendation on Friday with a EUR 340 target, pointing to improved order prospects.

For long-term investors, the structural case dominates: Europe's geopolitical shift is forcing the continent to build an independent, space-based security architecture, and space and military reconnaissance are converging — with OHB positioned at both intersections.

A nine-month checkpoint before the thesis is tested

Near-term setbacks after such dynamic moves should be factored in. Defence budgets rarely flow in a straight line, and parliamentary approval procedures remain prone to delay.

The next reliable gauge of operating performance arrives on 12 November, when the group reports figures for the first nine months of 2026. Only then will it be clear how much of the full order book is already flowing through to revenue and margin. Until then, the share price is likely to take its cue mainly from the political news flow — with all the opportunities and volatility the defence sector currently brings.
