Fresh from a pair of orbital successes and a new climate-research assignment, OHB SE finds itself in the familiar position of having plenty to show operationally while the market waits for proof that Europe's defense and space spending boom is actually reaching its income statement.

The Bremen-based space group announced Thursday that it has launched a two-year study for the European Space Agency, working alongside the Alfred Wegener Institute and the University of Exeter. The project will examine how satellite data can be used to detect critical tipping points in the Earth system early — among them permafrost, the Amazon rainforest, the West Antarctic ice sheet and the Atlantic Meridional Overturning Circulation. By combining scientific expertise with industrial space technology, the partners aim to determine which future Earth-observation missions will be needed to flag irreversible changes before they take hold.

For OHB, the ESA mandate reinforces its technological role in complex scientific missions and extends its footprint in civilian Earth observation, a segment that is moving toward the center of European space programs alongside traditional communications and navigation satellites. The stock, however, took little notice: shares were quoted at EUR 169.60 on Thursday, down 1.4%.

A Busy Stretch in Orbit

The ESA study lands on top of a run of operational milestones earlier this month. A launch vehicle lifting off from Vandenberg carried ATHENE-1, a technology demonstrator developed jointly with the University of the Bundeswehr Munich, into low Earth orbit. At the same time, subsidiary OHB Italia wrapped up the deployment of the Eaglet-II constellation after eight more satellites for Italy's IRIDE program reached orbit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying OHB SE?

Elsewhere in the group, the supervisory board of Rocket Factory Augsburg named Alexander Dahm as its new chief executive roughly two weeks ago, tasking him with pushing forward development of the RFA ONE launch system. The ESA also awarded preliminary studies for a European space station around the same period.

Berenberg Stays Bullish as Budget Hopes Build

Analyst Chris Armstrong of Berenberg reiterated a "Buy" rating on Monday with a price target of EUR 358, naming expected higher spending on space and defense in Germany and across Europe as the central driver for the sector. He counts OHB among six particularly promising names on the continent. The thesis rests on a straightforward expectation: as governments modernize their security architecture and seek independent satellite infrastructure, established system houses inevitably move into a key role.

The market has already priced in some of that optimism. Wednesday's session saw the shares climb 9.4% to EUR 172.00 — a rebound with no company-specific catalyst, according to dpa-AFX, which noted the stock rose in an entirely news-free sector environment after several sessions of noticeable declines. Year to date, the equity is up 47%.

Ownership remains tightly held. The Fuchs family controls a majority of the Bremen company, while financial investor KKR has been a minority shareholder through Orchid Lux HoldCo S.à r.l. since 2023. During a capital increase in June 2026, KKR acted as a seller of existing shares and trimmed its stake to roughly 20%, according to the half-year report dated August 6, 2026.

November 12 as the Next Reckoning

Political imagination and long-term government budget plans ultimately have to show up in order books and financial statements, and OHB has already set the date for its next evidence point. The company will publish its interim report for the first nine months of 2026 on November 12. That release will show how much of the projected budget increases the Bremen group is already converting into operating results.
