Palantir's Blowout Quarter Runs Into a Backlog That Refuses to Budge

Palantir's latest quarterly report landed with the kind of headline numbers most software companies can only dream about. The stock's response was rather less celebratory: shares fell 3.4% on the day, with Axios attributing the slide to worries over a contract backlog that barely moved from the prior quarter, alongside more probing questions about how long the AI rally can run even though revenue and profit both beat expectations.

The commercial side of the US business drew the sharpest scrutiny. Reuters reported yesterday that growth in total contract value from American commercial customers slowed to 11% year over year — a striking deceleration from the more than 153% increase booked in the previous quarter. Those concerns were credited to William Blair's analysts. Louie DiPalma said investors are now examining the durability of AI companies' growth far more closely, according to Axios, which also flagged the largely flat sequential backlog as an additional source of unease after the earnings release.

What the Numbers Actually Show

Revenue for the third quarter of 2026 climbed 96% from a year earlier to $2.31 billion, and GAAP diluted earnings per share came in at $0.44. Palantir also raised its full-year 2026 revenue outlook to $8.530 billion to $8.534 billion. For its US commercial arm, the company projected more than $3.559 billion in revenue, implying growth of at least 143%.

The contract figures reported a day earlier help explain the skepticism. The value of closed deals totaled $2.918 billion, up 6% year over year — a very different trajectory from the 96% revenue growth. These are distinct metrics and not directly interchangeable, yet the gap in momentum is a fair reason to look harder.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?

It would be a mistake, though, to read the muted share price as investors simply shrugging off good results. Equally wrong is the opposite conclusion: a backlog that stalled sequentially does not mean Palantir stopped signing new contracts. The reported deal signings argue explicitly against that.

A Milestone Buried Under Backlog Anxiety

The US commercial segment's revenue jumped 148% to $984 million, surpassing revenue from US government customers for the first time. That is a substantial achievement, and one that risks being lost in a debate fixated on the order book. Yet the very scale of that success raises the bar — the faster a business grows, the more important the question of what comes next becomes. That is not a forecast of impending weakness; it is the reason strong backward-looking figures and a skeptical market reaction can coexist.

The raised guidance strengthens the case against the bears, but it remains a forecast — something different from revenue already booked or business additionally secured by contract. The debate, then, should center less on whether the quarter was "good enough" and more on what it says about the continuation of growth. The robust revenue and the more cautious contract metrics send conflicting signals, and neither should fully crowd out the other.

Beyond the Quarterly Noise

Palantir and Stagwell have announced an expanded AI partnership aimed at reshaping corporate marketing, and Palantir said it will extend its sovereign AI offering to a new customer segment.

On balance, the skepticism looks grounded in fact, but a blanket verdict that business momentum is fading would be premature. Palantir's operating strength deserves recognition. Convincingly dispelling the doubts would require that strength to show up in a re-accelerating order base. Until then, the stagnant backlog is a weighty counterbalance to growth enthusiasm.
