Palantir's Iran Denial and a No-Bid ICE Deal Collide With a Stock at Its Peak

Shyam Sankar spent part of this week doing something defense contractors rarely do in public: explaining how their software may have contributed to a fatal error. Speaking to CBS News, Palantir's technology chief pushed back on claims that the company's Maven platform was responsible for a devastating strike on a school in Iran, attributing the likely cause to human error. He also outlined new automated safeguards being folded into targeting workflows to prevent a repeat.
The admission carries weight beyond a single incident. It acknowledges that even the most advanced defense software cannot fully eliminate operational misjudgment — it can only be retrofitted with additional layers of protection after the fact. For a company that sells information superiority to defense ministries, that is an uncomfortable concession.
Where the Business Model Meets the Battlefield
The episode raises questions that reach past the specific case. How much autonomy should software hold when the consequences cannot be reversed? Palantir's commercial pitch rests on the promise that its systems give military clients an unmatched edge. Doubts about the reliability of targeting tools threaten not just the confidence of those clients but also broader public acceptance of AI in conflict zones.
At the same time, resistance to dependence on American technology is building internationally. Pressure on Western governments to develop their own systems is mounting noticeably — a trend Palantir has tried to address through partnerships designed to guarantee national data sovereignty.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Palantir?
A Visa System, Minus the Competition
That same strategic logic is playing out on the domestic front. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement reportedly intends to migrate its Visa Security Program Tracking System onto Palantir's Foundry platform, opting to skip the regular procurement competition it had previously planned. To keep operations running through the transition, incumbent contractor Steampunk Inc. received a separate maintenance deal worth $1.65 million, with a term of up to two years.
The direct switch to Palantir underscores how firmly Foundry is embedded in U.S. security administration. When mission-critical analysis is at stake, agencies increasingly turn to platforms already in place — a pattern that has repeatedly handed the company strategic advantages over time-consuming new tenders.
Modular Data Centers for Sovereign AI
Palantir is also pushing to make its software available outside standard cloud environments. On October 1, the company announced a partnership with Armada to pair its Sovereign AI Operating System with Armada's modular data centers, creating infrastructure that keeps data under national control. Neither company disclosed financial terms or projected revenue contributions.
The appeal of regionally bound, sovereign computing capacity is growing among government agencies and heavily regulated industries. Running advanced analytics on modular hardware means sensitive data can be processed on site rather than routed through external data centers.
Two Banks, One Direction
Institutional research has taken notice of Palantir's dual role as a government supplier and operator of dedicated AI infrastructure. Goldman Sachs upgraded the stock from Neutral to Buy on Thursday with a $230 price target, citing demand for sovereign AI and industry-specific software. Barclays followed on Friday, initiating coverage at Overweight with a $265 target.
The stock closed the prior trading session at €186.56, up 5.3%, landing almost exactly on its 52-week high of €186.64. That rally leaves little room for disappointment. Should doubts about operational reliability grow, or more countries follow France's path of national self-reliance, political headwinds could put a serious dent in the data company's ascent.
