PFISTERER beats guidance with 20% revenue growth, but shares drop 15% as order intake slows and investors focus on future demand.

The gap between operational performance and share price reaction at PFISTERER has rarely been wider. The grid technology specialist delivered a first-half earnings update on Wednesday that beat its own guidance, yet investors have responded by marking the stock down sharply — a disconnect that raises questions about what the market is actually pricing in.

Growth Metrics Impress, But Order Intake Cools

Revenue for the first half of 2026 climbed 20.2 percent to EUR 256.7 million, while adjusted EBITDA margin expanded from 18.5 to 20.4 percent. Net profit surged 75.9 percent to EUR 38.3 million, with the second quarter alone contributing EUR 19.8 million versus EUR 10.1 million in the prior-year period. The quarterly revenue figure of EUR 129.8 million set a new record, up from EUR 113.4 million.

The Europe/Africa region led the charge, with sales advancing from EUR 115.8 million to EUR 140.3 million and EBITDA jumping from EUR 18.7 million to EUR 28.5 million.

Yet the market's attention has fixed on a different metric. Order intake normalized to EUR 263.0 million from EUR 290.2 million in the same period last year — a slowdown the company frames as a return to normal after exceptionally strong prior periods. The book-to-bill ratio remained above one, and the order backlog grew to EUR 340.3 million from EUR 312.5 million, providing visibility that management says extends into 2027.

Market Reaction: Patience Wearing Thin

The share price tells a different story. Within seven trading days of the results, the stock shed 15 percent. Thursday brought another 1.3 percent decline to EUR 70.00. Over the past 30 days, the equity is down 12 percent, and it now sits 37 percent below its May 52-week high of EUR 114.60.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying PFISTERER?

Technical indicators paint a cautious picture. The stock trades well below its 200-day moving average of EUR 81.47, as well as the 50-day average of EUR 84.14 and the 100-day average of EUR 90.17. The relative strength index at 33.6 signals oversold conditions, while annualized volatility of 56 percent underscores just how turbulent trading has become.

The immediate reaction to Wednesday's figures was particularly stark — the shares initially fell around 9 percent before recovering. Thursday's session saw the stock at EUR 72.00, up 1.6 percent from the prior close of EUR 70.90, though that bounce has proven modest.

Capacity Expansion Continues Unabated

None of this has deterred management from pressing ahead with an ambitious investment program. The company plans to bring a new HVDC qualification center online at its Winterbach site in the first half of 2027, targeting the fast-growing market for high-voltage direct current transmission. Production capacity is also being expanded in Germany and the United States.

The Winterbach project follows an announcement in early August — made via a mandatory disclosure — that the company would triple its floor capacity at its Czech facility. These commitments require significant capital and weigh on margins in the near term before translating into additional revenue, which may explain some of the market's wariness.

What Happens Next

Management's full-year guidance, issued in June, calls for revenue growth of at least 12 percent and a book-to-bill ratio above one. The first-half numbers comfortably exceed that bar. The question is whether order intake stabilizes in the second half — and particularly in the third quarter — to justify the backlog's promise of high visibility.

At the annual general meeting in June, shareholders granted discharge to the board and supervisory board for fiscal 2025 by a large majority and approved a dividend of EUR 0.85 per share.

For the bulls, the operational momentum is undeniable. For the bears, the chart suggests caution: an oversold RSI rarely marks a turning point on its own, and the 200-day line at EUR 81.47 looms as resistance. A reclaim of that level would be the first visible sign that the market is ready to trust the growth story again. Until then, the disconnect between what PFISTERER is achieving and what its share price reflects seems likely to persist.
