Pfizer's Legal Storm in Florida Can't Derail Pipeline Momentum

Florida sues Pfizer over COVID vaccine safety and transmission claims, seeking penalties, as the drugmaker reports positive Phase 2 eczema data.

Florida's top prosecutor has opened a new front in the long-running battle over COVID-19 vaccine messaging, filing suit against Pfizer and chief executive Albert Bourla. Attorney General James Uthmeier lodged the complaint yesterday in St. Lucie County, accusing the drugmaker of misleading the public about the shot's safety profile and its ability to curb transmission.

The state's petition pulls no punches. It alleges Pfizer downplayed known cardiac risks such as myocarditis and pushed claims about blocking the virus's spread that lacked solid backing. Florida is seeking an injunction, the disgorgement of profits and civil penalties of $10,000 per violation—a figure that climbs to as much as $15,000 per case where seniors or people with disabilities were harmed.

Billions in Sales at the Center of the Dispute

Prosecutors point to the sheer scale of the vaccine operation. According to the complaint, Pfizer spent roughly $10 billion on promotional efforts while booking more than $80 billion in global vaccine revenue. The filing also flags 2023 price hikes, when the list price per dose jumped from about $30 to between $110 and $130.

Pfizer rejected the allegations outright and said it will mount a defense in court. The action hardly caught the company off guard—it slots into a broader pattern of politically charged litigation over coronavirus treatments. Notably, a Florida grand jury concluded in January 2025 that it had found no evidence of wrongdoing by vaccine manufacturers.

A Pipeline Win Overshadowed by Headlines

While lawyers gear up, Pfizer's research teams delivered a result worth celebrating. The company unveiled detailed Phase 2 data at the EADV congress yesterday for tilrekimig, an experimental trispecific antibody being tested in adults with moderate-to-severe atopic dermatitis. The candidate hit its primary endpoint.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Pfizer?

At a 450-milligram dose given every two weeks, 62.5% of patients achieved at least a 75% improvement in skin clearance (EASI-75) by week 16, versus 19.9% on placebo. Monthly regimens of 50, 200 and 400 milligrams produced EASI-75 rates ranging from 47.8% to 61.0%, compared with 9.1% for the control group. No serious treatment-related adverse events were reported, according to the company.

With Phase 2 in the bag, Pfizer is now pushing tilrekimig into registration-track trials. Phase 3 studies in eczema and asthma are underway, alongside a Phase 2b/3 program targeting chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Across every dose tested, the drug showed a statistically significant EASI-75 improvement over placebo at week 16.

Oncology Data and a Quiet Deal With Washington

Pfizer is also gearing up to showcase its broader research engine. On Monday the company said it will present at the ESMO congress in Madrid from October 23 to 27, with data from 45 abstracts, eleven of them oral presentations.

Separately, Bloomberg reported, citing documents, that Pfizer agreed to hand over a share of extra net revenue from higher overseas prices on certain existing medicines to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. The exact percentage and the drugs involved are redacted in the paperwork. The arrangement runs from January 1, 2026 through January 20, 2029.

Shares Shrug Off the Legal Noise

Investors took the Florida lawsuit in stride. The stock closed yesterday at EUR 25.02, down 0.7%, yet it remains just 2.0% below its 52-week high of EUR 25.54. In today's session the shares are trading at EUR 25.09, up 0.3%, leaving them only 1.7% shy of that peak.

For a company working to offset looming patent expirations across its existing portfolio, pipeline wins like tilrekimig carry real weight. The next scheduled checkpoint for shareholders arrives on November 3, 2026, when management reports third-quarter results.
