Plug Power Burns Less but Has Little Left to Burn as Wall Street Trims Its Targets
Published on 10/18/2026 at 04:40 | Editorial boerse-global.dePlug Power's preliminary third-quarter figures landed this week with a double-edged message. Net cash burn came in at roughly $28 million, a figure that suggests management has its spending under control. Cash and cash equivalents at the end of the quarter stood at about $134 million, excluding restricted funds.
The restraint goes further than the headline burn. Plug Power raised no capital during the quarter — neither through its existing at-the-market program nor through any other equity or debt placement. For a company in a capital-hungry industry, that is either discipline or a sign that the window for raising money has narrowed.
Investors appear to be leaning toward the second reading. The stock fell 6.3% on Friday to close the trading week at EUR 1.24, and no company-specific trigger for the drop was identified. The move fits a broader pattern: markets have stopped paying up for hydrogen ambitions before the revenue arrives.
Two Banks, One Direction
The analyst community is converging on a sober view. Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 from $1.65 on Wednesday and kept an Underweight rating, citing reduced long-term growth expectations as hydrogen technology adoption drags. Susquehanna followed the same day, according to media reports, lowering its target to $1.75 from $2.50 while maintaining a Neutral stance and updating estimates across the alternative energy sector.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?
The cuts point to a structural problem rather than a company-specific one. High interest rates, tangled regulatory frameworks and delays in building out transport infrastructure are holding back large projects worldwide. Hydrogen remains a necessary piece of decarbonization, but the timeline for commercial viability has slipped.
Growth Is Still There — on Paper
Plug Power expects third-quarter revenue to grow more than 10% year over year. For the full year 2026, management still sees revenue up around 15% to 16%. Those are respectable numbers in isolation. The question is whether they hold up if the wider market keeps moving slowly.
Cost cuts alone will not restore confidence. In a sector where production facilities and infrastructure projects require long lead times, the balance sheet remains the pressure point. Investors are asking how long a technology leader can go without fresh capital while sales ramp up gradually.
A November Calendar With Two Tests
The next several weeks will be about credibility. Preliminary figures offer a first signal, but only the full report will show whether the lower cash burn is durable.
Plug Power is scheduled to release complete third-quarter 2026 results, along with a conference call, on November 9, 2026. Ten days later, on November 19, 2026, the company holds its Global Plug Symposium. At both events, management will need to show how it plans to bridge the gap between thrift and technological leadership.
Until there is tangible evidence that the market is accelerating, the stock will remain a symbol of the sector's disillusionment. Without a clear path to operating profitability, any rally is likely to stay fragile. The industry has lost its innocence — now only hard numbers count.
