Plug Power spent months watching its share price grind lower, so even a modest bounce carries weight. The hydrogen specialist's stock added 2.2% in the previous session to close at EUR 1.32, a pause for breath after a stretch defined by persistent skepticism. No specific catalyst was offered for the move, and the broader market mood remains cautious.

The relief is relative. In today's trading the shares sit at EUR 1.28, hovering just above a fresh 52-week low of EUR 1.24 — roughly 26% below the 50-day moving average of EUR 1.78. For a company that Wall Street long treated as a chronic destroyer of capital, the question is no longer whether the bleeding has slowed, but whether it has slowed enough.

A Quarter Without Dilution

On that front, the preliminary figures for the third quarter of 2026 contain something genuinely new. Plug Power estimates its net cash burn at approximately USD 28 million, a sharp step down from the USD 61 million consumed in the prior quarter. The company ended September with about USD 134 million in cash and cash equivalents — and, notably, raised no equity or debt capital during the period, issuing nothing through its existing ATM program.

That last detail matters more than the headline number. For years, shareholders absorbed repeated dilution as ambitious expansion plans devoured liquidity. A full quarter without fresh share issuance hands management a measure of credibility it had badly lost. It also leaves the margin for error uncomfortably thin: any unexpected delay on a major project could put the company back on the defensive quickly, and the window for an operational turnaround remains narrow.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Growth Targets Meet a Skeptical Tape

Cost discipline alone won't carry the story. Plug Power is guiding for revenue growth of more than 10% year over year in the third quarter, while reaffirming its full-year 2026 forecast of roughly 15% to 16% growth. Estimates for quarterly volume are tracking slightly below consensus, which tempers any premature enthusiasm — on the exchange, promises of future gains count for less than reliable delivery against milestones.

The project pipeline still carries weight. Plug Power holds a 280 MW contract with Arcadia eFuels for the ENDOR project in Denmark, alongside a 50 MW order from Orica in Australia, and management puts the global opportunity set at around USD 8 billion. Contracts, however, only become cash once they are signed, delivered, and installed — and the gap between past announcements and actual execution has been wide.

Analysts Keep Their Distance

Institutional analysts have yet to warm to the cost story. On October 14, Morgan Stanley cut its price target to USD 1.20 from USD 1.65 while keeping an "Underweight" rating, citing higher interest rates and declining valuation multiples across renewable energy names. Susquehanna trimmed its target to USD 1.75 from USD 2.50 on the same day, maintaining a "Hold" stance. Neither house is rewarding the recent belt-tightening until margin improvement is confirmed in audited figures.

That caution has roots. Investors have watched too many quarters in which short-term relief was undone by subsequent one-off charges. Repair promises need to be backed by hard numbers before they can be trusted.

Two Dates That Matter

Plug Power now stands at a genuine crossroads. The reduced cash burn shows management understands the need for hard cuts, but proof is still pending. The company will release its full third-quarter report on November 9, 2026, followed by its annual symposium on November 19.

Only when those events demonstrate a rising gross margin and a cash requirement that stays durably under control will there be room for a sustained re-rating. Until then, the risks outweigh the rewards, and the stock remains a highly speculative turnaround play.
