Plug Power no longer gets paid for what it might become. That is the blunt lesson of the past year for the hydrogen sector, and few companies wear the new reality as visibly as this one. Investors have stopped underwriting visions of an emissions-free industrial economy and started demanding evidence of unit economics that hold up on their own.

The share price tells the story in shorthand. Monday's close left the stock at EUR 1.23, a long way from its 52-week high of EUR 3.72 — a gap of 67%. A modest 0.9% gain in the latest session does little to alter the bigger picture of a stock still searching for a floor just above its recent annual low.

Wall Street Trims Its Numbers

The sell side has been adjusting expectations rather than abandoning the name. On 14 October, Morgan Stanley cut its price target to $1.20 from $1.65 while keeping an "Underweight" rating, pointing to pressure from higher interest rates, valuation markdowns and softer long-term expectations for global hydrogen adoption. Susquehanna moved in parallel, lowering its own target to $1.75.

For a capital-hungry business like Plug Power, that backdrop is unforgiving. Every dollar not generated internally carries more weight when borrowing costs stay elevated, and the era in which letters of intent alone could support a valuation has closed.

Contracts Signed, Cash Later

None of this means demand has evaporated. The company recently sealed an agreement to supply 280 MW of GenEco electrolysers for Arcadia eFuels' ENDOR project in Denmark, alongside a collaboration covering more than 1 GW of potential e-SAF facilities. The technology, in other words, is being ordered.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Turning orders into revenue is the harder part. Deliveries only begin once project developers issue formal notice to proceed, which leaves a lag between announcement and billable sales — precisely the gap that keeps investors on edge.

A Leaner Quarter, a Thin Buffer

The preliminary third-quarter figures cut both ways. Revenue is expected to have grown by more than 10% year on year, and management reiterated its full-year guidance of roughly 15% to 16% growth along with an improved gross margin. Net cash burn came to an estimated $28 million for the quarter, leaving cash and cash equivalents of about $134 million at period end, excluding restricted funds.

Notably, no fresh shares were issued through the at-the-market programme during the quarter, nor were other capital measures taken. That gives the company some operational breathing room — but hardly enough to absorb a setback, and it does nothing to settle the structural question of a sustainably positive cash flow.

Fixing the Factory Floor

To get manufacturing onto a commercial footing, Plug Power is reinforcing its bench. Dr. Lee Sweetland, formerly head of operations at Ballard Power Systems, has been brought in to drive the global industrialisation of PEM stack technology, with product reliability, manufacturing throughput and hard cost competitiveness as the priorities.

That is where the sector's bottleneck sits. Without falling unit costs in series production, electrolysers and fuel cells stay behind fossil alternatives on price — and no amount of project pipeline changes that arithmetic.

Two Dates in November

The calendar now carries unusual weight. Full third-quarter results are due on 9 November 2026, when investors will look for concrete signs that gross margin is genuinely turning and that cash consumption stays contained. Days later, on 19 November 2026, the digital Plug Symposium follows, where management must show how the large projects convert into profitable business.

The risks currently outweigh the rewards. Plug Power holds an established position in the hydrogen industry, yet its credibility with financial markets has been largely spent. Until the company proves in black and white that it can grow without a recurring financial high-wire act, the risk-reward balance argues against premature relief — and the November dates are likely to decide whether the stock finds durable support or the downtrend regains the upper hand.
