Plug Power's Frugal Quarter Meets a Wall Street That Wants More

Plug Power's slower Q3 cash burn and no new capital raise failed to lift shares, which fell 6.3% to EUR 1.24 as analysts cut targets.

Plug Power has spent years promising the hydrogen economy and delivering quarterly reminders of how far away it remains. On Thursday the company tried a different pitch: restraint. Preliminary third-quarter figures showed a markedly slower drain on its cash, and management pointedly noted it had tapped neither its at-the-market equity program nor any other capital raise to get there.

The market's reply came a day later. In a broad technology selloff, Plug Power shares dropped 6.3% to EUR 1.24 on Friday, landing almost exactly on their 52-week low of EUR 1.21.

What the Numbers Actually Show

The operating details were, on their face, reassuring. Net cash burn for the third quarter came to roughly USD 28 million, leaving about USD 134 million in cash and cash equivalents at period-end, adjusted for restricted cash. Revenue grew more than 10% year over year, and the company reiterated its full-year forecast of 15% to 16% sales growth.

In calmer markets, that combination — slower spending, no dilution, double-digit top-line growth — would typically be enough to quiet fears of an imminent share issue. This is not a calm market.

The broader hydrogen build-out is proceeding more slowly than the sector's pioneers had budgeted for. When customer demand arrives behind schedule, even improved cost control loses its shine. A smaller cash burn buys time; it does not substitute for a durable path to profit.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Plug Power?

Two Brokers, One Direction

Analysts have been voting with their models. Morgan Stanley cut its price target to USD 1.20 with an Underweight rating on Wednesday, citing explicitly lower long-term expectations for the pace of global hydrogen adoption. Susquehanna trimmed its target the same day, ahead of the upcoming quarterly reports, to USD 1.75 from USD 2.50 while keeping a Neutral stance.

The two moves frame the core tension. Plug Power can slow its spending, but the analysts' caution is aimed at something deeper than the cash flow statement: the speed at which the world is actually adopting hydrogen.

Announcements Versus Deliveries

The order book offers a case for patience, with an asterisk. Roughly three weeks ago the company signed a supply agreement for 280 megawatts of GenEco electrolyzers with Arcadia eFuels for Denmark's ENDOR project, alongside a strategic collaboration covering more than 1 gigawatt of potential projects. Shipments, however, begin only once the project receives formal construction approval.

That gap — between a headline and a cash inflow — can stretch across quarters or years. As long as the framework for buyers of green fuels and synthetic fuels remains clouded by uncertainty, firm investment decisions stay hard to extract.

The AI Connection

Friday's slide had nothing to do with hydrogen. According to AP, worries about the sustainability of heavy spending on artificial intelligence weighed on the entire technology sector, and the hydrogen specialist was swept up in the general weakness without any company-specific news that day. The retreat put the prior 52-week low of EUR 1.21 back within easy reach.

November 9 Is the Real Test

For investors, the question is shifting from near-term spending to the long-term viability of the business model. Can Plug Power deliver the growth it has promised without rapidly depleting its liquidity reserves again?

The detailed balance sheet and margin picture will arrive on November 9, 2026, when the company presents full third-quarter results on a conference call. Until then, the company stays on the defensive.

Cost discipline is a necessary obligation for staying maneuverable in a difficult capital market. The harder feat — proving that hydrogen technology can scale profitably and quickly without constant subsidies and project delays — is still outstanding for the entire industry.
