Qualcomm Extends Apple Patent Pact Through 2027 as Robotics Bet and 2nm Chips Take Shape

Qualcomm closed out a busy week with its shares finishing Friday at EUR 177.88, a single-day advance of 4.1% that left the stock up 20% since the start of the year on European trading venues. The gain came as a broad rally in technology names lifted the semiconductor sector, with Microsoft and other artificial-intelligence players driving momentum on Wall Street. Reuters counted Qualcomm among the session's standout chip winners. Even after the run, the equity still trades roughly 20% below its 52-week high.
The legal headline of the week arrived Thursday, when the company confirmed it had renewed its worldwide patent licensing agreement with Apple. The deal takes effect on 1 April 2027 and covers intellectual property rights independent of any actual chip shipments. Neither side disclosed how long the arrangement will run. Bloomberg reported that the iPhone maker accounts for more than a fifth of Qualcomm's total revenue, giving the extension outsized weight. The timing matters: smartphone chip sales slid 20% to USD 5.1 billion in the most recent quarter, so locking in licensing income offers a steadier footing. Apple's continued reliance on Qualcomm modems for forthcoming US devices such as the iPhone 18 Pro Max underscores how tightly the two companies remain linked.
Robotics Acquisition and Wearable Silicon
Beyond the courtroom-and-contract news, management pushed further into new technology territory. Qualcomm announced plans Wednesday to acquire PickNik Robotics, a move aimed at bolstering its physical artificial-intelligence strategy. No financial terms or transaction conditions were made public.
On the product front, the company rolled out several launches over recent days. For smart wearables, it unveiled the Snapdragon Sound Elite Gen 2 platform on Wednesday, which it says cuts power consumption by as much as 40% and doubles AI compute performance versus its predecessor. A day earlier, Qualcomm introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 6 and Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 smartphone platforms. Both processors are built on TSMC's advanced 2-nanometer process and are designed for on-device AI. Motorola and Xiaomi are among the first manufacturers adopting the platforms.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Qualcomm?
The architecture centers on two newly developed Oryon Prime cores clocked at up to 5 gigahertz, paired with six performance cores. Both chipsets integrate the X105 modem, capable of downlink speeds of up to 14.8 gigabits per second, along with Wi-Fi 8 support. A reworked casing design doubles the window before thermal throttling kicks in, according to the company. Leadership expects specialized AI agents to accompany established smartphone apps in the near to medium term rather than replace them outright.
China Expansion and Insider Selling
Qualcomm is also widening its global development footprint. In China, the group grew its engineering team past 6,000 specialists, a push meant to serve local consumer demand more directly while deepening ties to established domestic hardware supply chains.
The eventful trading week was accompanied by pre-arranged share sales from the executive suite. Regulatory filings show President and CEO Cristiano R. Amon offloaded 10,000 Qualcomm common shares on Friday at USD 200.00 apiece under a Rule 10b5-1 trading plan.
Institutional interest has picked up alongside the operational news. The number of hedge funds holding positions climbed to 95 in the second quarter.
