Larger loads, fewer crossings
While individual boats are carrying more people than ever, overall crossing figures for 2026 show a marked decline. Data indicates that 14,819 people made the crossing between January 1 and August 8, 2026 — a 43% drop compared with the same period last year. The number of boats used has fallen by 49%.
The trend toward larger loads has been building for years. In 2018, an average of seven people occupied each boat. By last year, that figure had risen to 62, and since August 2025 it has climbed further to roughly 67 per vessel.
Criminal organisations reportedly charge passengers between ÂŁ2,000 and ÂŁ4,000 for a place on these overcrowded dinghies.
Enforcement and political fallout
The Home Office confirmed that 258 migrants arrived on four separate boats on the preceding Saturday, alongside the record-setting vessel. Since the current Labour government took office, authorities report that 1,100 boats and engines have been seized, and approximately 47,000 attempted crossings have been prevented.
