Renk Group Adds EUR 130 Million Leopard 2 Gearbox Package as Investors Wait for the Margin Story to Catch Up

KNDS expands Renk supply deal by about EUR 130 million, yet deliveries start only in 2029 as the stock sits near its 52-week low.

Renk's order book gained fresh ballast this week, but the Augsburg-based drivetrain specialist still has to convince the market that backlog translates into profit. KNDS Deutschland expanded its existing supply agreement with the company by roughly EUR 130 million, covering HSWL-354 transmissions, TCS-354A control units and G4MA11 selector levers for vehicles in the Leopard 2 family. Deliveries under the new tranche are not scheduled to begin until 2029 and will run through 2032.

The timing matters. Renk shares had been drifting close to their 52-week low of EUR 33.49 before the announcement, and the stock has shed 34% since the start of the year — a retreat that reflects both the unwinding of earlier enthusiasm and lingering doubts about how quickly defense orders convert into earnings. Thursday's session brought a modest rebound, with the paper up 2.2% at EUR 35.49, while a second reading of intraday trading put the gain at 2.1% and the price at EUR 35.48.

A Finnish Follow-On Shows the Same Pattern

The KNDS extension is not an isolated event. Renk also secured a follow-up order from Finnish armored vehicle maker Patria for HSWL 076 transmissions destined for the TRACKX vehicle family, a package worth EUR 30 million. Finland and Sweden had kicked off initial procurement at the end of September, yet those gearboxes will not ship before 2027.

Taken together, the two contracts illustrate the structural rhythm of the defense supply chain: orders are placed against strategic requirements, while deliveries follow complex, multi-year schedules. For impatient market participants, the gap between signature and revenue recognition is the central irritant.

Why the Near-Term Numbers Still Dominate

The second quarter of 2026 laid bare the tension. Revenue rose 1.74% to EUR 353.59 million, up from EUR 347.53 million a year earlier, but operating profit failed to keep pace with that modest expansion. Earnings per share fell to EUR 0.15 for the quarter ending in June, compared with EUR 0.30 in the prior-year period.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

That divergence explains why the new orders, however welcome, have not triggered a broader re-rating. The tranches agreed this week will not feed into sales until 2029 at the earliest, leaving the current earnings picture untouched. Whether Renk can process future contracts at high margins — even as manufacturing costs climb — is the question that will determine how much valuation headroom the stock ultimately commands.

The Installed Base Is the Quiet Engine

On the bullish side of the ledger sits Renk's entrenched position in heavy tracked vehicles. According to company figures, roughly 3,300 Leopard 2 tanks and derivative platforms are in service across 23 countries. In June 2026, the company marked the 4,000th unit of its HSWL-354 transmission series at its Augsburg plant.

A growing fleet in the field steadily expands demand for maintenance, spare parts and modernization work — aftermarket business that typically delivers more stable returns than pure new-build production. Analysts are positioning for a recovery on that basis. Consensus estimates point to full-year 2026 earnings of EUR 1.71 per share, with the dividend projected to rise to EUR 0.729 per share after EUR 0.580 was paid for 2025. Should that trajectory hold, the present consolidation could serve as a foundation for a sustained revaluation.

What Could Go Wrong

The bear case centers on the long lead times. More than two years separate this week's agreement from the first delivery year of 2029. During that window, the supplier carries the risk of higher material and energy costs unless contracts provide for full pass-through.

Nor does the latest deal disclose a fixed number of newly ordered battle tanks. Unit volumes and specific destination countries were not made public at signing. If European procurement programs stall or defense budgets ramp up more slowly than hoped, disappointment on organic growth becomes a real possibility. And if profitability fails to show a meaningful pickup in the intervening quarters, investor confidence could erode further, capping the stock's upside for the foreseeable future.

Two Dates on the Calendar

Technically, the picture hinges on whether support above the recent 52-week low of EUR 33.49 holds. A stabilization within the current valuation band remains possible as long as that level is defended; a decisive break below it would likely extend the broader downtrend.

Concrete evidence on near-term profitability arrives in two stages. A pre-close call for the first nine months is set for October 21, 2026 in Augsburg. Then, on November 5, 2026, Renk publishes its nine-month report alongside a conference call. That release stands as the next major catalyst — the moment when the market learns whether operating margins are moving back toward expectations while the large contracts continue to mature in the background.
