Renk Group's EUR 130 Million Gearbox Deal Extends Leopard 2 Pipeline Into the 2030s

Renk secured a EUR 130M Leopard 2 transmission package with KNDS and a EUR 30M Patria order, as its stock trades well below its 52-week high.

Renk Group has locked in a fresh tranche of work tied to Europe's most widely deployed main battle tank, even as the Augsburg-based propulsion specialist continues to trade well below its peak valuation.

Under an expansion of existing supply arrangements announced Wednesday with KNDS Deutschland, Renk will provide HSWL-354 transmissions, the TCS-354A electronic transmission control unit and the G4MA11 selector switch for the Leopard 2 and its associated family of vehicles. The package carries a volume of roughly EUR 130 million, with deliveries scheduled to begin in 2029 and run through 2032.

The long runway between signing and shipment underscores just how far ahead heavy military vehicle procurement is planned. For armed forces, the order covers both the upkeep of fielded fleets and planned new builds, meaning critical drivetrain components must be committed years in advance.

A Platform With Global Reach

Renk's position rests on a chassis that is fielded around the world. According to KNDS, some 3,300 Leopard 2 units and related family vehicles are in service with militaries across 23 countries. Renk marked a production milestone in June 2026 when it began building the 4,000th unit of its HSWL 354 transmission line in Augsburg.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

The contractual ties come as the ownership picture at Renk's partner shifts. Reuters reports that KNDS's stock market ambitions, first floated in early 2026, have cooled. Germany and France are still pursuing joint state control of the tank manufacturer, a structure that stands in the way of a near-term listing. That leaves Renk well placed as an independent supplier of drivetrain systems.

Patria Order Adds Near-Term Work

Separately, Renk picked up a follow-on contract from Patria for HSWL 076 transmissions destined for the TRACKX vehicle family. That award is valued at EUR 30 million, with deliveries set to start in 2027 — a much shorter timeline than the Leopard 2 package.

Valuation Pressure Weighs on the Sector

The stock has been caught in a broader pullback across European defense names. On Tuesday, Renk shed 2.2% to close at EUR 33.98, a decline with no company-specific trigger behind it; the move reflected souring sentiment toward the sector as a whole. Wednesday brought a modest rebound, with the shares adding 1.8% to EUR 34.59. Even so, the stock sits far beneath its 52-week high of EUR 75.20.

After the sector's strong run, investors are increasingly questioning whether lofty earnings expectations can still be justified at current prices. Bank of America analyst David Holmes added to that skepticism in early October, dropping his buy rating on Renk. His argument: the present level of transmission output looks difficult to sustain, with the company leaning more heavily on cyclical modernization work and restocking of inventories.

What the Calendar Holds

Renk has scheduled a pre-close call on third-quarter figures for October 21. The full quarterly statement for the first nine months of 2026, complete with a conference call, follows on November 5. Those numbers should offer the clearest read yet on whether the operating business can hold its ground against the mounting caution surrounding the wider industry — a test that pits multi-year program visibility against a market now pricing execution speed far more soberly.
