Renk Group's Shrinking Perimeter Masks a Bigger Question: What the Continuing Business Can Deliver

Renk's lower 2026 targets cover only continuing operations after the planned Miba bearings sale, with analysts seeing a cleaner portfolio and order visibility.

Renk's revised 2026 guidance has landed with a thud among some market watchers, but the arithmetic behind the headline tells a more nuanced story. The defence and industrial group's new targets cover a narrower company than before, and the gap between the old and new figures owes as much to accounting perimeter as to operating performance.

At the heart of the shift is the agreed sale of Renk's plain bearings division to Austria's Miba AG, announced yesterday. The purchase price sits in the low-to-mid three-digit million euro range, and the transaction still hinges on customary regulatory approvals — a binding contract, in other words, is not a completed disposal.

A Different Yardstick for 2026

From the fourth quarter, Renk will report the plain bearings business as a discontinued operation under IFRS 5. The updated guidance therefore applies only to the continuing segments, VMS and Marine & Industry: roughly EUR 1.4 billion in revenue and adjusted EBIT of EUR 240 million to EUR 255 million.

Set that against the previous group-level outlook of more than EUR 1.5 billion in sales and adjusted EBIT of EUR 255 million to EUR 285 million, and the reduction looks stark. It isn't a like-for-like comparison. The old numbers included a unit that is on its way out, so reading the lower targets as proof of operational deterioration would conflate two separate effects.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Barclays analyst Afonso Osorio takes a relaxed view, describing the slightly lower estimates as negligible and welcoming the cleaner portfolio, according to dpa-AFX. Jefferies, for its part, has crunched the numbers without the bearings division and arrives at EUR 1.45 billion in revenue and EUR 261 million in adjusted EBIT — both above the company's own targets — while keeping its Buy rating and a EUR 60 price target.

What Stays, What Goes

The disposal is not a full exit from civilian activity. Renk has said the civil operations of its Marine & Industry division are untouched by the Miba deal, so investors should draw a line between the bearings unit being handed over and the businesses that remain. The strategic direction, though, is unmistakable: Renk aims to lift defence to around 90% of group revenue by 2030 — a target, not a current mix.

The unit changing hands generates about EUR 130 million in annual revenue, according to Miba, and employs roughly 500 people across five production sites.

An Order Book That Reaches Past the Current Cycle

Against the reshaped guidance, the order flow offers a counterweight. On 14 October, Renk and KNDS Deutschland agreed an extension worth around EUR 130 million covering gearboxes, gearbox control units and gear selection switches for the LEOPARD 2 and its vehicle family. Deliveries are scheduled to begin in 2029 and wrap up in 2032 — visibility that stretches well beyond the current financial year, though it adds nothing to near-term revenue.

Renk Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

JPMorgan, meanwhile, has trimmed its earnings-per-share forecasts for 2027 through 2030. Analyst David H. Perry points to a slower ramp-up of German armoured vehicle programmes and weaker industrial prospects.

The next hard data point comes on 5 November, when Renk reports third-quarter 2026 results. That release will show how revenue, earnings and orders are actually developing within the continuing operations — the question today's guidance debate leaves open. How quickly the remaining programmes gather pace, and what earnings contribution the continuing business genuinely delivers, matters as much as the pace of Renk's pivot toward defence.
