Renk Group Wins Jefferies' Mid-Cap Crown as EUR 130 Million Leopard 2 Extension Pushes Visibility to 2032
Published on 10/19/2026 at 17:21 | Editorial boerse-global.deJefferies has handed the Augsburg-based transmission specialist Renk Group one of its coveted "Mid Cap Top Pick" designations, arguing that the market's worries about the durability of traditional defence spending are overdone and that the company looks cheap relative to its peers. The endorsement landed on a Monday when the stock still slipped 0.7% to EUR 37.87, dragged down not by anything specific to Renk but by a broader pullback across European defence names that had rallied hard in the preceding sessions.
That weakness proved short-lived. By the following session the shares had recovered to EUR 38.78, a gain of 1.7%, as German defence stocks firmed up across the board. dpa-AFX attributed the rebound to a friendlier overall market and to Morgan Stanley's expectation that upcoming orders from the federal budget could give the sector a lift into year-end — no single company announcement drove the move.
An Installed Base That Keeps Paying
The core of Jefferies' case rests on a simple mechanical argument: the number of vehicles carrying Renk gearboxes keeps climbing, and every one of them eventually needs spares and servicing. That growing installed base opens up additional room in the high-margin aftermarket, which throws off recurring revenue regardless of whether new contracts are signed. It is a business model that compounds quietly in the background while headline orders come and go.
Feeding that base are long-term contracts with European defence manufacturers. Renk and tank builder KNDS Deutschland agreed an order extension worth roughly EUR 130 million covering HSWL-354 transmissions complete with transmission control units and gear selector switches for the Leopard 2 main battle tank and other vehicles on that platform. Deliveries under the deal are scheduled to begin in 2029 and wrap up by 2032, giving the project a planning horizon that stretches well into the next decade.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?
Alongside that programme sits a follow-on order from Finnish defence group Patria worth EUR 30 million for HSWL 076 transmissions used in the Trackx vehicle family, with series deliveries slated to start in 2027. Taken together, the two agreements sketch out a backlog that runs for years rather than quarters.
Two Dates the Market Is Circling
Investors will get their next read on trading when management holds a pre-close call in Augsburg on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, ahead of the nine-month report. The full interim statement for the first nine months of 2026 is due on November 5, with a conference call that day during which the board will detail operational progress and how the order backlog is being worked through.
Those conversations typically let analysts and investors square their models with the company's framing before the hard numbers land. Attention will centre on the visibility of incoming orders and on overall demand trends in the defence sector, the better to gauge momentum for the remainder of the year.
Jefferies reaffirmed its "Buy" rating on Renk on October 7, 2026. After a stretch of heightened volatility the shares have regained ground and now sit 16% above their 52-week low — a recovery that gives the upcoming briefings plenty to live up to.
