Renk Holds Near 52-Week Low as Analysts Diverge and UBS Reshuffles Its Stake

Renk closed at EUR 40.79, down 24% this year, as MWB and Berenberg back Buy ratings ahead of a 8 December strategy update.

Renk Group shares finished Friday's session at EUR 40.79, a modest 1.2% daily advance that leaves the defence supplier hovering just 3.8% above its 52-week trough. The stock has shed 24% since the start of the year, a decline that has done little to settle the debate among analysts over where the gearbox and drivetrain specialist heads next.

That debate sharpened considerably in recent days. MWB Research reaffirmed a "Buy" rating on the company and lifted its price target to EUR 53 from EUR 48, pointing to Italy's procurement plans for new main battle tanks and the untapped potential in Renk's aftermarket business. Berenberg struck a more ambitious note on Thursday, keeping its "Buy" call and a EUR 72 target, citing the company's operational setup and the sector's full order books as reasons for confidence in the medium term.

The two bullish notes sit against a backdrop of broader caution. Sentiment across the defence sector has been choppy, and Renk's slide toward its annual low reflects that unease. Market participants are now looking to the company's strategy update, scheduled for 8 December, for clearer direction on how management intends to convert its pipeline into results.

Washington and Berlin Signal Closer Ties

Part of the optimism stems from a diplomatic shift. On 16 September, German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius and his US counterpart Pete Hegseth signed a memorandum of understanding at the Pentagon aimed at deepening the integration of German defence contractors into NATO supply requirements. Renk is viewed among the potential beneficiaries of that arrangement, according to media reports, with the cooperation offering a steadier demand base for chassis and drivetrain components over the longer haul.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

How quickly those government intentions translate into firm orders remains the pivotal question for the SDAX-listed group's valuation.

UBS Stake Moves Draw Attention

Shareholder activity has added another layer of volatility. A mandatory disclosure published Friday showed UBS Group AG crossing the 5% voting rights threshold on 23 September. A separate notification, triggered by an event on Wednesday, put the Swiss bank's total holding — including financial instruments — at 4.57%, down from a previously reported 5.36%. The company noted that this is a voting rights notification and does not equate to a straightforward purchase or sale of shares.

The sequence follows an earlier disclosure the previous Wednesday, when UBS reported a total stake including instruments of 5.13%, up from 4.86%. Media reports linked midweek share weakness in part to reallocations of voting rights shares by the major investor.

Industrial Footprint on Display

Beyond the trading floor, Renk used the Turbomachinery and Pump Symposium in Houston — held from 22 to 24 September — to showcase its couplings, plain bearings and turbo gearboxes for industrial applications, a reminder that its revenue base extends well past defence.

For now, the stock's immediate trajectory hinges on whether the transatlantic defence momentum and the December strategy update can outweigh the selling pressure that has kept the shares pinned near their yearly low.
