Renk has put its HSWL 406 transmission at the centre of its pitch for future armoured-vehicle programmes, naming Italy's NMBT project as a prospective application for the hardware. The unit is designed for vehicles weighing between 50 and more than 70 tonnes and delivers up to 1,400 kW of drive power. What the announcement does not contain is an order.

That distinction sits at the heart of how the DĂĽsseldorf-based drivetrain specialist is currently being valued. Italy's NMBT effort is led by Leonardo Rheinmetall Military Vehicles, the joint venture between the two defence groups, and Rome has approved an initial financing tranche for as many as 290 vehicles built on the KF-51 Panther platform, according to company statements. For Renk, that represents a potential sales avenue rather than a confirmed volume of business.

Hard Orders Carry Their Own Timetables

Contracted work looks rather different. Roughly three weeks ago Renk and KNDS Deutschland expanded an existing order covering transmissions, control units and gear-selector switches for the LEOPARD 2 and its vehicle family — a package worth about €130m, with deliveries scheduled between 2029 and 2032. The long lead time illustrates that even a signed agreement does not translate into near-term revenue.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

A second confirmed deal arrived on 6 October: a follow-on Patria order worth €30m for the TRACKX vehicle family, with shipments due to begin in 2027. Renk also flagged business beyond the armoured-vehicle sphere on Thursday, reporting a significant Saab contract for Renk Magnet-Motor covering three Stirling power-generation systems destined for a submarine programme run by a NATO member state.

JPMorgan Cuts Its Target, Keeps Its Rating

Against that pipeline, sell-side expectations have been trimmed. On 21 October JPMorgan lowered its price target on Renk from €62 to €50 while reaffirming its "Overweight" rating. Analyst David H. Perry pointed to a somewhat slower ramp-up of German armoured-vehicle programmes and gloomier prospects in the industrial business, and cut his earnings-per-share forecasts for 2027 through 2030, according to dpa-AFX.

A day later Barclays took a constructive view of the planned separation from the plain-bearings business. Analyst Afonso Osorio reduced his price target to €57 and likewise kept an "Overweight" rating, with moderately lower estimates doing nothing to dent his positive stance. The sale to Miba, agreed roughly a week earlier, still requires customary regulatory approvals — strategic endorsement is neither a completed divestment nor an unchanged set of profit expectations.

Reading the Signal, Not the Spec Sheet

The thread running through all of this is timing. A development milestone widens the range of programmes Renk can address; a signed contract provides firmer ground; and even then the agreed delivery window governs how the business lands in the accounts. Investors weighing the HSWL 406 headline therefore face a question the announcement itself leaves open — not simply which platforms the gearbox might equip, but when interest converts into binding orders, and when those orders convert into shipments.
