Renk's Record Order Book Meets a Shifting Shareholder Register

Renk presses ahead with production expansion and the David Brown Defence purchase, while its shares trade near a 52-week low despite a record EUR 7.4 billion order backlog.

Renk Group is navigating a September in which its industrial story and its stock market story are pulling in opposite directions. The defence gearbox specialist continues to deepen its footprint in military manufacturing, yet its shares remain under persistent selling pressure, changing hands at EUR 41.31 on the day — a decline of 2.0%.

That softness sits awkwardly beside the operational momentum. With demand for military equipment showing no sign of cooling, the company is pressing ahead with an expansion of its production lines, a move designed to secure long-term delivery capacity for heavy tracked vehicles and to meet the growing requirements of armed forces.

A British Acquisition Takes Shape

Central to that push is the agreed purchase of David Brown Defence, a UK-based heritage firm specialising in high-precision gear systems for land and naval applications. The transaction, announced more than a month ago, is slated to close in the fourth quarter of 2026, subject to regulatory clearance. Renk regards the deal as a strategically important addition to its existing portfolio in core defence markets. Since the agreement was unveiled, the stock has shed 6.7%.

Continuity at the top is being locked in alongside the expansion. CEO Alexander Sagel's contract has been extended early and now runs through the end of March 2032.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Order Book Provides the Backbone

The numbers behind the strategy offer some reassurance. In the first half of 2026, Renk booked incoming orders worth EUR 1,195 million, lifting its order backlog to an all-time high of EUR 7.4 billion. Management is holding firm to full-year guidance of more than EUR 1.5 billion in revenue for 2026, with adjusted operating profit targeted at a midpoint of EUR 270 million. According to the company, more than 90% of expected revenue is already covered by the existing pipeline.

Institutions Move in Opposite Directions

The shareholder register has been anything but static. BlackRock disclosed on 8 September that it had trimmed its holding to 4.13%, down from 4.18%. On the other side of the ledger, UBS Group AG filed a voting rights notification showing a total stake of 5.08%, held predominantly through financial instruments. A separate position consists of 1.10% in direct voting rights alongside 3.98% in the form of financial instruments.

Those opposing moves among major holders lay bare the differing time horizons at play. Some institutions are lightening up; others are building exposure to the sustained demand running through the security and defence sector.

Analysts See an Entry Point

Despite the weak price action, sector watchers spy value in the gearbox maker's equity. During the earlier slide, one expert identified an attractive opportunity to establish a fresh position. According to media reports, the stock touched a 12-month low of EUR 40.91 on 16 September.

In today's session the shares changed hands at EUR 41.70, a drop of 1.1%, holding a modest cushion above the 52-week trough of EUR 39.28 as the market waits for completion notices on the pending transactions.

The picture that emerges is a company split in two: on one side, an industrial base in the defence sector growing through acquisitions and capacity expansion; on the other, market participants demanding tangible proof that those investments will translate into rising earnings before they are willing to call a durable stabilisation.
