Renk secures a EUR 30 million follow-on gearbox order from Patria, but shares fell 2.9% as margin concerns overshadow the deal.

Renk has landed a EUR 30 million follow-on order from Finnish defence contractor Patria for HSWL-076 gearboxes destined for the TRACKX vehicle family, with deliveries of the drive units scheduled to begin in 2027. The Augsburg-based propulsion specialist announced the deal today, but the market's response was muted: the stock slipped 2.9% to EUR 36.49, leaving it barely above its 52-week low of EUR 36.14.

The contract extends a pre-series order placed earlier this year, following procurement steps taken by Finland and Sweden at the end of September. Sweden has ordered five units for trials, while Finland has signed a letter of intent covering future series purchases. For investors, the agreement matters less as a revenue event than as a signal about the durability of Renk's core franchise — and in the current climate, order announcements no longer translate automatically into share price gains.

That shift marks a clear change in mood. Defence stocks were long driven by headline momentum regardless of near-term margins; market participants now scrutinise profitability, delays and the actual leverage a contract exerts on free cash flow.

The Profitability Question Behind the Order Book

The central issue is how quickly Renk can convert its full order book into profitable earnings growth. Revenue in the second quarter of 2026 edged up 1.74% year on year to EUR 353.59 million, yet earnings per share halved from EUR 0.30 to EUR 0.15 over the same period. That gap between top-line growth and operating profit is fuelling doubts about margins in the running business.

European defence budgets are expanding, but the reorganisation of armed forces forces suppliers into heavy upfront investment. Gearbox production for light tracked vehicles in the 10- to 20-tonne class demands modern manufacturing capacity and continuous development work. At the same time, concerns are mounting across the industry that drone-based systems could partly displace classic land combat vehicles, adding pressure on traditional hardware.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Renk Group?

Whether the recent earnings weakness is a temporary transition effect or points to structural strain in individual segments is therefore decisive. If management cannot bring profitability back towards the level of earlier quarters soon, the stock's valuation premium risks eroding further.

Scaling Up Through Nordic Procurement

Under the optimistic scenario, the latest contract lays the groundwork for substantial growth in the years ahead. Patria plans to begin series production of the vehicle family in 2027 or 2028. Should Finland and Sweden move into broad series manufacturing after the trial phases, follow-up orders in the triple-digit millions could await the roughly 700-kilogram HSWL 076 gearbox.

The platform's technological direction offers additional potential. Beyond conventional mobility, the gearbox enables remote control, convoy driving and autonomous functions. The two partners had already presented a corresponding platform for heavy unmanned ground vehicles in June, positioning Renk early in a segment that modern military strategies increasingly demand.

If the group can move these new developments into series production without costly friction, revenues could rise markedly from 2027. Analysts already hold out the prospect of a dividend of EUR 0.73 per share for full-year 2026, up from EUR 0.58 the previous year. Hitting that target would durably strengthen shareholder confidence.

Delays, Budget Pressure and the Risk of a Permanent Discount

The pessimistic case is shaped by the operational risks that accompany industrial ramp-ups. If government procurement decisions slip or certification of the carrier vehicles by the Nordic armed forces stalls, delivery of the drivetrains shifts further back. More than a year remains before the planned first delivery, a period in which pre-financing costs can weigh on liquidity.

Add to that the risk of cancellations or cuts to defence programmes should Western governments shift priorities under fiscal pressure. Talk of possible losses in peripheral divisions and rising development costs is further dampening sentiment. If the margin pressure from the second quarter proves lasting, the market's expectation of full-year earnings of EUR 1.71 per share for 2026 could quickly wobble.

Renk Group at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

In such an environment, institutional money risks rotating further into other defence segments. Should investors increasingly favour electronics and sensor specialists over mechanical components, a valuation discount could become the norm.

Chart Support and the November Test

The stock has fallen 32% since the start of the year, a decline that already reflects considerable restraint among market participants. The segment suffers under high expectations that lengthy bureaucratic processes in defence projects repeatedly temper. A single follow-on order worth EUR 30 million is nowhere near enough to offset weaker developments in other business areas, and there is a risk that Finland ultimately sizes its purchases smaller than hoped.

For now, investors face a choice: treat the current setback as an entry point into a long-term procurement cycle, or stay defensive. As long as support near the annual low absorbs selling pressure, the chance of stabilisation remains intact. If that floor gives way under sustained selling, the correction could widen.

The next fundamental test is already scheduled. On 5 November 2026, the company reports its interim figures for the third quarter. Those numbers will show whether margins have recovered from the spring dip and whether integration of the new orders is proceeding on plan — the performance check that will ultimately determine whether the latest contract marks the start of a lasting recovery.
