Rheinmetall's push beyond land systems gathered pace on two fronts this week, with the defence group confirming its winning bid for a Romanian shipyard and booking a fresh armoured-vehicle order that investors greeted warmly.

The Düsseldorf-based company and Swiss shipping line MSC secured the Mangalia yard at auction on 19 October, paying roughly EUR 138 million between them. Rheinmetall intends to develop the site into a hub for both civilian and military shipbuilding. The facility is also expected to take part in the construction of four Romanian naval vessels.

ARTEC Lands 69-Vehicle Package

On the land side, the OCCAR procurement agency placed an additional order with ARTEC — the joint venture of Rheinmetall and KNDS Deutschland — for 69 Schakal wheeled infantry fighting vehicles. The split runs 35 for Germany's Bundeswehr and 34 for the Dutch armed forces. Rheinmetall puts its own share of the contract in the mid-three-digit millions of euros, a figure that covers the company's portion rather than the joint venture's total.

Deliveries are scheduled to begin in May 2032 and run through November 2033.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Investors responded positively to the news, with the stock climbing as much as 4.2% during the session, though other reports put the gain at 3.7%. Either way, the Schakal contract was cited as the main catalyst.

Telford Plant Restores UK Gun Production

Separately, Rheinmetall confirmed the opening of its "UK Gun Hall" in Telford about a week ago, marking the return of independent large-calibre weapons manufacturing to Britain. The conversion from an empty building to a working production site took eight months. At full capacity the plant is designed to turn out up to 245 barrels and more than 50 breech mechanisms a year, supporting over 100 skilled jobs.

The company has invested more than GBP 200 million in its UK operations over the past five years.

UBS Trims Target, Keeps Buy Rating

Analyst sentiment has been more guarded. UBS lowered its price target on 20 October to EUR 1,360 from EUR 1,600, according to media reports, while leaving its "Buy" rating intact.

Rheinmetall's next confirmed reporting date is 5 November 2026, when it will publish third-quarter results.
