Rheinmetall Insiders Step In as Berenberg Trims Target and Defence Orders Roll In

CEO Papperger and a foundation tied to the supervisory board bought Rheinmetall shares in late September and early October as the stock sits 3.6% above its 52-week low.

Rheinmetall's senior leadership is putting money behind its own stock at a moment when the market has turned noticeably wary. On 29 September, chief executive Armin Papperger acquired shares worth EUR 498,947.80 — a purchase that lands roughly five weeks before the group's interim report on 5 November 2026. A second filing followed on 2 October, when the Sara Georgi Stiftung, closely tied to supervisory board member Andreas Georgi, bought Rheinmetall paper worth EUR 238,706.60. Taken together, the transactions suggest key decision-makers see the current valuation as an entry point.

Shareholders have had little else to cheer lately. The stock closed Friday at EUR 935.30, leaving it down 40 percent since the start of the year and just 3.6 percent above its 52-week low.

A Flurry of Contract Wins Across Three Continents

While the share price has sagged, the operating side of the business has been busy. American Rheinmetall Defense booked a U.S. Army order worth USD 20.7 million to manufacture and modernise weapon mounts. In northern Europe, Rheinmetall Nordic opened a new branch in the Norwegian town of Skoppum on 1 October, creating positions for 100 employees.

The Australian arm has been equally active. Rheinmetall Defence Australia and partner Praetorian Aeronautics delivered the first prototype of the containerised counter-drone system AERIE on Wednesday — a demonstrator with room for more than 20 interceptors, developed in just twelve months. Full operator demonstrations are slated for the fourth quarter of 2026. A day earlier, the same unit struck a cooperation with Breaker to integrate tactical software into Australia's Boxer reconnaissance vehicles, with the partners showcasing voice-controlled operation of autonomous systems.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Space-based reconnaissance is expanding too. Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions disclosed on Tuesday that the Bundeswehr has gained direct access to assigned SAR satellites under the SPOCK-1 programme and can now task them independently.

Berenberg Steps Back, Jefferies Stays Bullish

Analysts are split on what comes next. Berenberg downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" on Friday and slashed its price target from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020. Analyst George McWhirter pointed to mounting uncertainty over the order pipeline beyond 2030, arguing that sustaining growth past that horizon would require a far larger intake of new business than is currently visible.

Jefferies sees things differently. Analyst Chloe Lemarie reaffirmed a "Buy" rating on Wednesday, highlighting the start of production at the satellite site in Neuss and the company's swift reallocation of existing capacity.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Balance Sheet Buffer Ahead of the November Test

Rheinmetall has moved to give itself more financial room regardless of how the debate plays out. On Thursday it renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule, doubling the line from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. Beyond the increase for general corporate purposes, the group widened its banking syndicate to include international partners.

The next hard data point arrives on 5 November 2026, when management presents third-quarter results. That report will need to show whether incoming orders can quiet the concerns about long-term growth momentum.
