Rheinmetall adds a Kassel workforce pipeline and a Black Sea shipyard, doubles its credit line, while Berenberg cuts and Bernstein and RBC stay bullish.

Rheinmetall has moved on two fronts in a matter of days, securing a workforce pipeline in Germany and a Black Sea shipyard in Romania, while sell-side opinion on the defence contractor remains sharply divided ahead of its third-quarter report.

The Düsseldorf-based group and rail equipment maker Alstom confirmed on 6 October that they have reached a basic understanding over the future of Alstom's Kassel plant. Under the arrangement, Alstom employees would transfer to Rheinmetall Landsysteme at the same site, though the two sides have yet to nail down contractual specifics. The move speaks to Rheinmetall's pressing need for both manufacturing capacity and skilled labour as its Landsysteme unit, which builds tracked and wheeled military vehicles, hunts for additional floor space.

A Shipyard in Mangalia, a Satellite in Orbit

Expansion is not confined to Hesse. Rheinmetall Real Estate România SRL, a group subsidiary, picked up the site of Damen Shipyards Mangalia at an auction run by insolvency administrator CITR. The winning bid came in at EUR 138,034,320.47 excluding VAT. According to CITR, the disposal opens the door to restarting shipbuilding operations at the location.

Elsewhere in the group, Rheinmetall Nordic opened a new facility in the Norwegian town of Skoppum on 1 October, adding capacity for development, production, system integration and lifecycle support. The same day, subsidiary Rheinmetall Italia and partner Argotec sent their first reconnaissance satellite into orbit aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9, a system designed for space-based airspace surveillance and military situational awareness.

Technology partnerships are advancing in parallel. On Tuesday, Rheinmetall and Breaker signed an agreement to integrate the latter's human-machine coordination software into the Australian Boxer CRV wheeled armoured vehicle, giving crews the ability to direct autonomous units by voice. Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions, a joint venture, reported the same day that the Bundeswehr has gained direct and exclusive access to several radar satellites for reconnaissance under the SPOCK 1 programme.

Credit Line Doubled to EUR 1.5 Billion

To fund the growth it expects, Rheinmetall renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule last Thursday, doubling the framework from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The line is available for general corporate purposes.

The equity market has yet to reward the build-out. The shares closed Friday at EUR 935.30, leaving them down 40 percent since the start of the year and the company valued at EUR 43.63 billion.

Berenberg Cuts, Bernstein and RBC Stand Pat

Analyst views have diverged accordingly. On 9 October, Berenberg downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" and slashed its price target to EUR 1,020 from EUR 1,600, citing doubts about medium-term growth momentum and thinner order coverage in the vehicles and weapons-and-ammunition divisions. The broker also pencilled in 2030 group revenue of EUR 37.6 billion, below the EUR 41 billion consensus.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Bernstein struck a different tone the same day, reaffirming its "Outperform" rating and a EUR 1,200 target. RBC Capital Markets likewise reiterated "Outperform," according to media reports, keeping its price target at EUR 1,600.

Investors will get a clearer read on the current trading picture next month, when Rheinmetall publishes its quarterly statement for the third quarter of 2026 on 5 November.
