Rheinmetall's 12% Slide Exposes the Gap Between Growth and Delivery

Rheinmetall's shares fell 12% on Wednesday, a day after the defence group trimmed its full-year targets for a second time, and the scale of the drop says less about demand than about timing. The order book is swelling; the question investors are now asking is when that work actually lands in the accounts.

The company now expects 2026 revenue of around EUR 13.2 billion, down from a previous range of EUR 13.7–14.2 billion. The operating margin outlook was cut to roughly 18.5% from about 19%. Rheinmetall attributed the revision to the likely postponement of the Arminius order for Boxer vehicles, which it no longer expects to book this year, alongside later lot acceptances for artillery ammunition. Revenue and advance payments tied to those munitions deliveries are shifting into 2027.

A quarter that stands on its own

The downgrade arrived just as Rheinmetall reported third-quarter operating profit of EUR 553 million on sales of EUR 3.149 billion, a margin of 17.5%. Order intake came in at EUR 2.893 billion. Over the first nine months of 2026, revenue reached EUR 8.4 billion, up 38% year on year, while operating profit climbed 69% to EUR 1.34 billion — growth in earnings outpacing growth in sales.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Those figures are not in conflict with the guidance cut. A company can expand briskly and still miss its own annual targets; one number describes the expansion, the other the reliability of the planning behind it. What the revision changes is the yardstick: growth alone no longer carries the story, but growth that converts into revenue and profit inside the promised window.

Brokers split on what the miss means

JPMorgan's David Perry lowered his price target to EUR 1.150 from EUR 1.350 on Wednesday while keeping a "Neutral" rating, having anticipated a sharp share-price reaction to the profit warning. He pointed to repeated guidance warnings and uncertainty over longer-term revenue prospects.

RBC took the other side, reaffirming "Outperform" with a EUR 1.600 target. Analyst Colin Moody called the quarterly metrics strong, according to media reports, though he acknowledged they were overshadowed by the clouded annual outlook. The two calls frame the debate neatly: the quarter was solid, the visibility is not.

Rheinmetall has scheduled its Capital Markets Day for 27 November 2026, where management will have to show that the delayed Arminius order, the slipped munitions acceptances and the associated payments are a matter of scheduling rather than a hole in the story.
