Rheinmetall's Black Sea Bet: Shipyard Deal, Spanish Ammo Line and a Doubled Credit Line Underpin the Growth Story

Rheinmetall fell 3.5% to €1,051.60, just above its 50-day average, as German defence stocks pulled back; Bernstein reiterated Outperform with a €1,200 target.

Rheinmetall shares were changing hands at 1,051.60 euros on Monday, down 3.5 percent, as German defence names gave back part of the strong gains booked at the start of the week, according to dpa-AFX. The retreat coincided with reports that US President Trump had suspended a new sanctions package against Russia — though whether that decision directly triggered the losses is not established.

The pullback leaves the stock just above its 50-day moving average of 1,049.82 euros, a level that underscores how sensitive the shares have become to geopolitical headlines. Only a few sessions earlier, the picture was quite different: on Friday the paper jumped 5.4 percent to close at 1,090.20 euros, then 3.7 percent above its 50-day average of 1,051.64 euros. That rally followed a Reuters report of a Ukrainian strike on a Russian refinery after the end of an energy truce, which media reports said steered investors back toward European defence stocks.

Analysts Keep the Faith

Bernstein Research reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating on Monday and stuck with a 1,200-euro price target, offering shareholders some reassurance amid the day's volatility.

The company itself is looking well past the daily swings. Alongside shipping group MSC, Rheinmetall won the auction for Romania's Mangalia shipyard, with the two partners together paying a purchase price of roughly 138 million euros. The deal is expected to close in a few weeks. The acquisition strengthens the group's industrial footprint in the Black Sea region, adding maritime capacity and infrastructure that can support eastern European partners — a move squarely in line with its strategy of shifting production and repair sites closer to NATO's eastern allies.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Munitions, Money and the US Market

Capacity expansion continues apace elsewhere. Rheinmetall Expal Munitions commissioned a new medium-calibre production line at its Albacete site in Spain last Friday, designed for an annual output of around three million components to meet rising demand from European armed forces.

On the financing side, the group moved early to secure headroom, renewing its syndicated credit facility in mid-October and doubling the volume from 750 million euros to 1.5 billion euros. The new facility replaces the previous agreement and is available for general corporate purposes.

Across the Atlantic, the American Rheinmetall subsidiary presented new technologies for the future US Army at the AUSA 2026 defence trade fair on 12 October, positioning its system solutions for upcoming US procurement programmes — engagement in the American defence market being a strategic pillar of the group's international expansion. Partnerships beyond the purely military sphere are advancing too: on 13 October, Norwegian hydrogen company Nel ASA and Rheinmetall signed a non-binding letter of intent to examine the technical and commercial feasibility of decentralised production of renewable fuels.

Investors get their next hard look at the operating business on 5 November 2026, when the group publishes its third-quarter 2026 results.
