Rheinmetall's Capacity Bet Meets a Split Verdict on Valuation
Published on 10/26/2026 at 17:41 | Editorial boerse-global.deRheinmetall shares closed Friday at €1,014.60, sitting below the price targets of the two research houses that updated their views this week — a gap that frames the central question facing investors: does new factory space translate into earnings, or merely into potential?
The stock gained 2.5% in the session covered by one market report, a friendlier reaction that on its own does little to settle that question. What matters more, bulls and skeptics agree, is execution.
Two Analysts, Two Targets, One Shared Vote
UBS cut its price target for Rheinmetall on 20 October to €1,360 from €1,600, keeping its "Buy" rating intact. The bank pointed to the capital markets day scheduled for 26–27 November as the reference point for its valuation. Bernstein Research, in a note dated the same day, reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating and €1,200 target without changing either the call or the number.
Both targets remain above Friday's close. According to media reports, news of possible Italian orders had not triggered a sustained turnaround in the share price up to that point.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
That Italian chatter centred on a potential tank order for the joint venture between Rheinmetall and Leonardo, reported by media on Thursday. One report put the possible volume at €3.7 billion — but no confirmed order announcement from Rheinmetall accompanied it.
Spain, Britain, Romania: The Build-Out in Motion
On the industrial side, Rheinmetall brought a new medium-calibre production line online in Albacete on 16 October. The facility is designed for roughly three million ammunition components a year, at an investment of about €20 million. A second site, the "UK Gun Hall" in Telford, has also opened and is intended to manufacture weapon systems.
Shipbuilding entered the picture too: on 19 October, Rheinmetall and MSC were jointly awarded the Mangalia shipyard in Romania, with a combined purchase price of €138 million. Rheinmetall plans both civil and military shipbuilding activity there. The closing is expected in a few weeks — meaning the award is granted, but the transaction is not yet complete.
Capacity figures describe what a plant is built to do, not what it is already producing. The distinction between available capacity and realised output is the yardstick investors should apply to the next round of company disclosures.
A Drone-Order Detour and a Bigger Credit Line
Not every piece of news pointed to expansion. Handelsblatt reported on Thursday that the Bundeswehr is to procure 48 GARMR drone-defence systems from Diehl as an interim solution, citing delays with Rheinmetall's Skyranger system. The purchase was described as a planned procurement.
On the financing side, Rheinmetall has doubled its syndicated credit line ahead of schedule, from €750 million to €1.5 billion. Third-quarter figures are scheduled for release on 5 November.
Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.
What the Next Report Has to Show
The optimistic case rests on Rheinmetall converting its broader manufacturing base into deliveries and earnings. Additional orders would carry weight mainly if their execution becomes traceable. In that scenario, the Mangalia award would first need to close, then demonstrate how the company turns the site into actual business.
The risk case is not about whether the plants exist, but whether they pay off. A commissioned line can fall short if the ramp-up runs slowly or utilisation stays thin — a scenario, not an observed trajectory at Rheinmetall. A widening gap between industrial milestones and their earnings impact would be the problem, and further expansion announcements would not automatically close it.
Neither the day's share-price move nor the analyst targets resolve these questions. Until Rheinmetall shows a convincing path from added capacity to economic return, the sum of opened and planned sites matters less than what the 5 November quarterly report reveals about how that capacity is being used.
