Rheinmetall's Contract Engine Keeps Humming, but the Market Isn't Buying It

American Rheinmetall has secured another piece of U.S. defense business, this time through a $7.28 million order routed via supplier ADS Inc. from the Defense Logistics Agency. The package covers twelve Mission Master SP autonomous ground vehicles and five amphibious kits destined for the U.S. Marine Corps, with the systems earmarked for operational testing and the expansion of autonomous logistics capabilities. Rheinmetall itself confirmed the award.
The deal slots into a broader pattern of smaller but strategically meaningful wins across the Atlantic. Earlier in September, American Rheinmetall picked up a roughly $710,000 contract from Kongsberg Defence & Aerospace to produce machined components for MCT-30 turrets under the U.S. Marine Corps' ACV-30 program, with production slated to begin at the Lapeer and Lansing plants in Michigan during 2026 and 2027. A separate spare-parts contract for the U.S. Navy has been signed, though its value has not been disclosed. Rheinmetall Canada is also supplying replacement components for U.S. Navy air-start units, a single-digit million-euro order awarded through the Canadian Commercial Corporation by the U.S. Department of Defense.
Open interfaces, new alliances, and a Kassel bet
Beyond hardware, the Düsseldorf-based group released key Battlesuite interfaces — including its Onboard API and Tactical API — as open source, a move that signals an ambition to anchor its software layer in future networked battlefield systems.
On the industrial front, Rheinmetall is pooling resources with MAN Truck & Bus and Poland's WB Group under a strategic partnership aimed at equipping European armed forces with military vehicles. Closer to home, the company and the Hessian state government signed a memorandum of understanding for a new logistics and technology hub at Kassel-Calden airport. The investment is pegged in the triple-digit million-euro range, with operations targeted to begin by the end of 2027. A planned technology center in Neuss has also been floated in press coverage as a possible additional source of jobs.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
Not every competition has gone Rheinmetall's way. Sweden's modern rocket artillery tender went to Lockheed Martin instead, a loss that German media have framed as a setback in the race for further large European orders. On the other side of the ledger, American Rheinmetall handed over its first Lynx XM30 prototype vehicle to the U.S. Army, gaining ground in the contest for a future U.S. armored vehicle program.
A stock that refuses to follow the order book
None of this has translated into share-price strength. Rheinmetall closed Thursday at €1,013.00, up 0.5% on the day, yet the stock sits 46% lower over twelve months and down 35% year-to-date. It has drifted far from its record high set last October and is trading closer to its 52-week low. Measured against the 52-week peak of €2,007.00 reached on October 3, 2025, the decline comes to roughly 49%.
Analyst sentiment is split down the middle. At the start of September, mwb Research upgraded the shares from "Sell" to "Hold" while keeping its €1,050 price target unchanged — a signal that the house sees the slide losing momentum. Deutsche Bank, by contrast, maintained its "Buy" rating with a far loftier €1,800 target, laying bare the gap between fundamental valuation and where the stock actually trades. mwb also saw no near- or medium-term risk to the group from an AfD victory in a German state election, a political factor that had recently added to investor jitters.
For shareholders, the picture remains genuinely two-sided. Rheinmetall keeps collecting orders from the Navy, the Marine Corps and the Army, backed by billion-euro investment plans on home soil. The lost Swedish tender is a reminder that Europe's procurement race is not a clean sweep. Whether operational strength eventually shows up in the quote may become clearer on November 4, when the company reports third-quarter results.
