Rheinmetall Defence Australia has wrapped up development of a containerized counter-drone platform alongside partner Praetorian Aeronautics, capping a twelve-month sprint from first concept to a working demonstrator. The AERIE-C-UAS prototype packs more than 20 interceptors into a standard 20-foot ISO container and pairs Australia's domestically developed Arrow effector — built for beyond-line-of-sight kinetic strikes — with the software-driven Hadrian command architecture. Full operator demonstrations are slated for the fourth quarter of 2026.

The milestone lands as Rheinmetall pushes deeper into ground-based air defense, a segment gaining urgency as small unmanned aircraft increasingly shape modern battlefields. The group's space-based reconnaissance arm is expanding in parallel: Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions confirmed that the Bundeswehr will gain access to specialized SAR surveillance satellites under the SPOCK-1 program, with production running at the Neuss site. The announcement followed the launch of a surveillance satellite aboard a SpaceX rocket just days earlier, developed jointly with Argotec.

Estimates Cut Ahead of Quarterly Report

On the financial side, market watchers trimmed their third-quarter forecasts after limited visibility heading into the interim report. Revenue expectations slipped from EUR 3.9 billion to EUR 3.4 billion, while the projected operating result (EBIT) was pared back from EUR 740 million to EUR 650 million. The rating remains at Hold with an unchanged price target of EUR 1,050.

Insider activity has drawn attention as well. CEO Armin Papperger has poured roughly EUR 13.8 million into company stock since 2023 — more than four times what his holding obligations required. Three newer management board members have made smaller voluntary purchases so far, with further transactions anticipated in the months ahead.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Order Book and Guidance Underpin the Outlook

The longer-term foundation rests on a heavily loaded order pipeline. Group revenue climbed 39% to EUR 5.23 billion in the first half of 2026, while operating profit jumped 74% to EUR 786 million. Total orders on hand reached EUR 80.5 billion at the end of June. For the full year, management is targeting revenue of EUR 13.7 billion to EUR 14.2 billion, a range set after the F126 frigate project dropped out of the picture.

International expansion continues apace. Rheinmetall Nordic opened a facility in Skoppum, Norway, spanning 4,579 square meters of gross floor area to bolster development and systems integration capacity. American Rheinmetall, meanwhile, secured a USD 20.7 million contract to manufacture and modernize mount systems for the U.S. armed forces.

Sponsorship Debate Simmers

Away from defense operations, a public spat over sports sponsorship is generating headlines. According to media reports, Borussia Dortmund is weighing whether to let its contract with Rheinmetall lapse when it expires at the end of 2027, after 65% of voting members at a general meeting came out against the deal. Rheinmetall, which estimates the partnership brings the club up to EUR 10 million annually, considers the arrangement a success and wants a joint decision on its future.

Shares Soften as Brokers Stay Bullish

Rheinmetall stock was trading at EUR 943.30 on the day, down 1.0%, after sector-wide profit-taking pressured European defense names despite a broadly friendly market backdrop. The pullback has done little to dent the optimism of major research houses. Deutsche Bank's Christoph Laskawi reiterated a Buy rating and a EUR 1,800 target, pointing to continued strong revenue growth and the Bundeswehr's "Arminius" tank project, which the budget committee is due to debate in early December. Bernstein sees the shares reaching EUR 1,900.

Hard confirmation of the business trajectory will arrive with the next financial report, scheduled for November 5.
