Rheinmetall Orders Surge but Shares Slump: Market Misses Defense Growth

The disconnect between Rheinmetall's order flow and its stock market performance is becoming harder to ignore. On Monday, the defence group confirmed two Bundeswehr contracts worth more than €500 million each — one covering additional mobile field hospitals, the other an extension of an existing vehicle deal — yet the shares continue to trade near levels that suggest investors are looking straight through the good news.

The medical systems order, which involves the production of mobile rescue stations, is scheduled to begin manufacturing in the first quarter of 2027. The vehicle contract extension adds 149 protected and unprotected platforms to the German military's fleet. Together, the two awards underscore how deeply Rheinmetall has embedded itself in the Bundeswehr's logistics and medical infrastructure — a segment that offers multi-year revenue visibility, even if it lacks the headline drama of main battle tanks or artillery systems.

That visibility matters. The company's order book was already a focal point of its most recent quarterly results, and these fresh contracts only add to the pile. But the market's response has been muted at best. The stock closed Monday at €1,125.80, down 2.8 percent on the day, leaving it roughly 44 percent below its 52-week high of €2,007.00 reached in early October. The year-to-date loss stands at 28 percent.

A Tale of Two Narratives

The contrast between operational momentum and share price weakness is stark. Just last Wednesday, Rheinmetall and sensor specialist Hensoldt demonstrated the successful integration of passive sensor technology into a modern air defence system during the Timber Express 2026 exercise in Manching. Days earlier, the company showcased the first launch of its FV-014 loitering munition from a containerised missile launcher mounted on an HX truck.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

These are not incremental updates. They signal a company broadening its footprint beyond vehicles and ammunition into networked air defence and precision strike capabilities. Yet the market has shrugged. The pattern suggests investors are less impressed by individual product milestones than by the broader growth trajectory — and on that front, the recent signals have been mixed.

Three weeks ago, Rheinmetall cut its 2026 revenue forecast following the cancellation of the F126 frigate programme. The company also imposed a usage ban on certain protective plates. Since the guidance reduction, the shares have lost around 2.1 percent. The combination of lowered expectations and continued order momentum has created an uneasy equilibrium, with each new contract announcement greeted by a collective "yes, but."

Analysts Split on the Valuation Gap

The divergence of opinion among sell-side houses reflects the uncertainty. RBC initiated coverage on August 11 with an "Outperform" rating and a price target of €1,600 — the most bullish call in recent circulation. Jefferies followed three days later, lifting its target from €1,300 to €1,350 while maintaining a "Buy" recommendation.

Both targets sit well above the current price, yet the gap between these bullish assessments and where the stock actually trades speaks to a deeper scepticism among institutional investors. The question is whether that scepticism is about the company's execution, its growth prospects, or simply the valuation that had been built into the shares during their spectacular run.

What Comes Next

Management will get a chance to make its case at two upcoming events: the DZ Bank Expert Day on August 27 and the Berenberg Stockholm Seminar on September 1. Both gatherings offer a platform to walk investors through the billion-euro order pipeline in medical and vehicle systems, as well as the progress in sensors and munitions.

Given the recent share price weakness, the tone of that communication could prove decisive. The operational story is compelling — the order book is full, the product pipeline is expanding, and the Bundeswehr relationship has never been deeper. But until the market sees evidence that the growth narrative can withstand the setbacks, the stock may continue to trade on the back foot, regardless of how many contracts cross the wire.
