Rheinmetall's Order Book Is Not the Issue — Getting Paid Is

Rheinmetall's nine-month figures landed with force: revenue of EUR 8.4 billion, up 38% year on year, and operating profit of EUR 1.339 million, a 69% jump. The operating margin came in at 16.0%. Yet the stock gave up 12% yesterday, because the numbers arrived alongside something investors liked far less — a second downward revision to full-year guidance, published on Wednesday.

The cut was not about demand. Rheinmetall now expects 2026 revenue of roughly EUR 13.2 billion, down from a previous range of EUR 13.7–14.2 billion, and an operating margin of about 18.5% instead of around 19%. The company pointed to likely delays in the awarding of the Bundeswehr's Boxer project Arminius, slower lot acceptances for artillery ammunition, and revenue shifts in the weapons-and-munitions business. Related advance payments and revenue contributions are sliding into 2027.

Two Houses, Two Verdicts

Analysts responded along sharply different lines. JPMorgan trimmed its price target to EUR 1.150 from EUR 1.350 while keeping a "Neutral" rating, as reported by dpa-AFX. David Perry flagged the group's repeated profit warnings and held to his caution about further negative share-price impulses, singling out the capital markets day on 27 November as a possible trigger for another review of Rheinmetall's longer-term targets. The company has scheduled the event for that date.

Morningstar went further on valuation, cutting its fair value estimate by 21% to EUR 1.900 from EUR 2.380 and lowering its long-term business expectations. Even so, the research house kept its five-star rating, citing a wide economic moat and assessing uncertainty as medium. The endorsement now rests on considerably more conservative assumptions.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

By 2030, Morningstar projects revenue of EUR 38.8 billion, well below its earlier forecast of EUR 47.5 billion — a revision that reaches far beyond this week's guidance cut. Long-term operating profit is now seen at EUR 7.7 billion rather than EUR 9.9 billion. The wide-moat argument, in the house's view, only supports a positive valuation if those competitive advantages actually show up in realized earnings.

Arminius Sets the Clock

Timing is where the thesis gets tested. Morningstar does not expect the Arminius order and its associated advance payments until 2027, with artillery ammunition acceptances also running late. That puts cash conversion at the center of the valuation: relief depends on when the expected down payments arrive and when delayed acceptances clear. For the current year, Rheinmetall still holds out the prospect of positive operating cash flow.

How heavily the story leans on the flagship project is illustrated by mwb Research, which reiterated "Hold" with a price target of EUR 1.050. Strip out Arminius, and that target would sit roughly 20% lower, by the firm's own reckoning. Analyst Jens-Peter Rieck described the latest quarter's beat on operating profit as weak in quality and criticized cash conversion, arguing the investment case has become more dependent on Arminius.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

For shareholders, the weighting is straightforward. Rheinmetall's long-term growth prospects remain intact provided the company converts its hefty order backlog into revenue, profit and cash inflows on schedule. Delays, by contrast, weigh on both near-term financial firepower and the long-term assumptions underpinning valuations. The 27 November capital markets day may help reset expectations — credible detail on how the backlog will be executed and when the cash will flow is what investors will be listening for. That, more than the order book itself, will decide whether Morningstar's continued optimism survives its own downgraded forecasts.
