Rheinmetall's Order Pipeline Outpaces Its Factory Floors

Rheinmetall closed at €1,014.60, under UBS's trimmed €1,360 target and Bernstein's €1,200, as investors weigh how fast orders convert to revenue.

Rheinmetall shares closed Friday at €1,014.60 — below the price targets of both UBS and Bernstein Research, even after UBS trimmed its own. The gap between what analysts think the defence group is worth and what the market is currently paying frames a broader question for investors: how much of Rheinmetall's swelling order book will actually convert into revenue, and when.

UBS cut its target to €1,360 from €1,600 on 20 October while keeping its "Buy" rating intact, pointing to the capital markets day on 26–27 November as the next valuation marker. Bernstein Research reaffirmed its "Outperform" stance and €1,200 target the same day, leaving both its rating and price objective untouched. News of possible Italian contracts had, according to media reports, failed to spark a sustained turn in the stock up to that point.

Italy Talks: Ready to Build, Not Yet Signed

Those Italian reports concern the joint venture between Rheinmetall and Leonardo. Reuters, citing Milano Finanza, put the potential volume of army orders for main battle tanks and fighting vehicles at a total of $4.16 billion. A separate report valued a possible tank order at €3.7 billion. Rheinmetall declined to comment on either figure, and no confirmed order announcement accompanied them.

Leonardo manager Lorenzo Mariani likewise confirmed no contract had been signed, though he described the programme as production-ready from the company's standpoint. Readiness on the shop floor and a signed contract remain two distinct things — a distinction that matters when weighing how much of the reported pipeline is bankable.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

ATACMS Shows How Long the Fuse Really Is

The same gap between order intake and industrial delivery plays out in the missile business. According to media reports from 7 August, Rheinmetall plans to produce ATACMS rockets for US military stocks together with Lockheed Martin. Chief executive Armin Papperger cautioned at the time that the production ramp-up might not begin for more than two years, with the joint venture expecting its first revenue in 2028. That guidance concerns the rocket project specifically, not Rheinmetall's wider production expansion, and it does not represent a fresh delay reported today. It does, however, illustrate why the timeline of a defence programme deserves as much attention as its headline order value.

The same August reporting raised the prospect of a possible multi-billion-euro order for Boxer infantry fighting vehicles for the German army as early as 2026 — a possibility, not a confirmed contract. Concrete production volumes, investment sums and schedules for the broader capacity build-out were not disclosed in today's report, so the pace at which extra capacity will come online cannot be quantified.

Skyranger Slips While Albacete Ramps Up

On the German home front, Handelsblatt reported Thursday that the Bundeswehr is to procure 48 GARMR drone-defence systems from Diehl as an interim solution, attributing the need to delays with Rheinmetall's Skyranger system. The procurement was described as a planned project.

Rheinmetall at a turning point? This analysis reveals what investors need to know now.

Completed expansion tells a different story. Rheinmetall commissioned a new medium-calibre production line at its Albacete site on 16 October, which the company says has an annual capacity of roughly three million ammunition components. On the financing side, the group has also doubled its syndicated credit line ahead of schedule, from €750 million to €1.5 billion. Third-quarter figures are due on 5 November.

For a defensible read on the economic impact, capacity and timing details are still missing. Further orders alone will not settle the case — visible progress in delivering on them will.
