Rheinmetall acquired Damen Shipyards Mangalia for EUR 138 million and doubled its credit line, while Berenberg downgraded the stock to Hold.

Rheinmetall is pressing ahead with a broad expansion of its defence footprint — snapping up a Black Sea shipyard, securing exclusive satellite reconnaissance access for the Bundeswehr and deepening its robotics partnerships — even as the investment community remains sharply divided over where the DAX-listed group's stock is headed next.

The Düsseldorf-based arms maker closed Friday's session at EUR 935.30, leaving it down roughly 40% since the start of the year. That decline has been months in the making, and the shares are hovering just above their 52-week low of EUR 902.50. In pre-market trading, the stock was quoted at EUR 941.30.

Two Bulls, One Skeptic

The split in analyst opinion was on full display Friday. Bernstein Research reaffirmed its "Outperform" rating with a EUR 1,200 price target, while RBC Capital Markets — according to media reports — stuck to its own "Outperform" call and a EUR 1,600 target, citing expectations of a robust order intake ahead of the third-quarter figures.

The bullish camp is not without its counterweight. Berenberg downgraded the stock from "Buy" to "Hold" the same day, slashing its price target dramatically from EUR 1,600 to EUR 1,020. Analyst George McWhirter pointed to uncertainty over medium-term growth prospects, stressing that the company will need a substantial influx of new orders to sustain its expansion trajectory beyond 2030.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

A EUR 138 Million Shipyard Purchase

While the analysts sparred, Rheinmetall moved on the operational front. Subsidiary Rheinmetall Real Estate România SRL acquired the site of Damen Shipyards Mangalia through an auction run by insolvency administrator CITR. The winning bid came in at EUR 138,034,320.47 excluding VAT. According to CITR, the sale opens the door to restarting shipyard operations at the location.

Satellites, Robotics and a Bigger Credit Line

Technology agreements rounded out the week's activity. On Tuesday, Rheinmetall and Breaker signed a deal to integrate Breaker's human-machine coordination software into the Australian Boxer CRV wheeled armoured vehicle, enabling crews to direct autonomous units by voice command.

The same day, joint venture Rheinmetall ICEYE Space Solutions reported that the Bundeswehr has gained direct and exclusive access to several radar satellites for reconnaissance under the SPOCK 1 programme.

On the financing side, Rheinmetall moved early to reinforce its balance sheet. On Thursday, the group renewed its syndicated credit facility ahead of schedule and doubled its volume from EUR 750 million to EUR 1.5 billion. The new line fully replaces the previous arrangement and is available for general corporate purposes.

What November Will Tell

With the interim report for the third quarter due in early November, market participants now face a straightforward question: will the incoming figures vindicate RBC's confidence, or lend weight to the more cautious voices?
