Rheinmetall's Skyranger Timeline Takes Shape as Maintenance Work Anchors Revenue

Rheinmetall has locked in a firm production schedule for one of its most closely watched air-defense products, even as the equity continues to trade at a steep discount to its highs. The Düsseldorf-based defense contractor confirmed that serial delivery of its Skyranger anti-aircraft system is contractually set for 2027, according to CEO Armin Papperger, who spoke to Euronews on September 17. The platform is positioned as a core layer in defending against modern aerial threats.
That milestone sits alongside a broader set of commitments the company is steadily converting into a visible revenue pipeline. On September 14, Rheinmetall secured an artillery munitions order from an undisclosed international customer, booked in the third quarter of 2026. The deal covers a low five-figure quantity of 155-millimeter shells and carries a value in the low triple-digit millions of euros. Production is already underway, with full delivery targeted for completion in 2027.
Service Contracts Build Longer-Term Visibility
While the headline-grabbing work involves weapons systems, Rheinmetall's maintenance arm is quietly adding multi-year revenue streams. The company's Naval Systems Division landed a framework agreement on September 23 from Germany's General Customs Directorate to service four LNG-powered customs vessels. The fleet includes one 67-meter ship and three additional vessels measuring 55 meters each.
The scope extends beyond routine upkeep at the berths. Rheinmetall will also provide technical support for breakdowns that occur during active operations, an arrangement that stretches earnings visibility well into the back half of the decade. Financial terms were not disclosed.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?
The company isn't limiting its expansion to naval maintenance. Papperger indicated that two new joint ventures are close to being finalized, and he expects initial orders for cruise missiles to materialize either late in 2026 or early in 2027 — a move that would push the product range past its traditional core segments.
Subsidiary Projects Round Out the Order Book
Smaller units within the group are contributing their own operational wins. Pierburg Pump Technology received roughly EUR 1.5 million in grant funding to develop industrial production processes for NanoLam capacitors, with total investments at the site projected to exceed EUR 4.4 million.
Rheinmetall Electronics and Rheinmetall Landsysteme, meanwhile, reported progress on infantry equipment programs. A new training device for marksmanship and combat instruction tied to the schwerer Waffenträger Infanterie passed its official factory acceptance test. The group also took part in NATO's REPMUS26 exercise in Portugal, where networked unmanned systems for protecting maritime infrastructure took center stage. A deployable, containerized Rheinmetall system served as the operations hub for the German Navy during the maneuver.
Market Focus Shifts to Execution
Despite the steady flow of contract announcements, the stock has struggled to gain traction. European defense names came under elevated selling pressure, with Rheinmetall down 3.8% on Thursday alone. The dpa-AFX news agency attributed the weakness to growing uncertainty surrounding geopolitical conflicts, state rearmament programs, and elevated oil prices.
At 970.90 euros, the shares are nursing a 1.5% decline in today's session, sitting roughly 52% below their 52-week high of 2,007.00 euros. The picture looks similar from the start of the trading year, with the equity posting significant losses since January.
MWB Research offered a pointed read on the shift in sentiment: after quarters of record order intake, the market is now scrutinizing how quickly Rheinmetall can actually work through that backlog. Investors are increasingly demanding hard evidence that the company can turn its hefty commitments into countable revenue on a timely basis. That question — not the pace of new signings — is what currently sets the tone for the share price.
