Rheinmetall has picked up a maintenance and repair contract covering four new LNG-powered customs vessels, handed to the Düsseldorf-based defence and technology group by Germany's federal customs administration. The award extends the company's reach into maritime servicing for civilian security agencies, a niche it has been quietly deepening alongside its better-known armoured vehicle and ammunition work.

The news landed midweek, with the stock holding roughly flat. Rheinmetall shares changed hands at €997.50, a dip of 0.03% on the day. Since the start of the year, the equity has shed 36%, and it now sits 50% below its 52-week high of €2,007.00.

State funding backs capacitor production

On the industrial side, subsidiary Pierburg Pump Technology has secured a grant of about €1.5 million for its Hartha site in Saxony, earmarked for manufacturing processes tied to high-performance NanoLam™ capacitors. Total investment in the project tops €4.4 million. The funding, confirmed a day earlier, is aimed at shoring up Rheinmetall's production capacity for key components.

Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rheinmetall?

Munitions order booked for Q3 2026

Those operational steps follow a sizeable ammunition win from the previous week. On 14 September, Rheinmetall booked an order from an international customer for a low five-digit quantity of 155 mm artillery shells. The contract carries a value in the low triple-digit million euro range and was recorded in the third quarter of 2026. Production is already under way, with delivery scheduled for 2027.

Unmanned systems and UK vehicle work

Rheinmetall has also been showcasing its naval credentials. At the NATO REPMUS26 exercise, held on Monday, the group put networked unmanned systems through their paces, testing harbour and critical infrastructure protection. The containerised setup is designed to serve the German Navy as a flexibly deployable mission system.

Across the Channel, the company joined forces with Mercedes-Benz UK to present light tactical vehicles for the British Army, and invested in a vibration test rig at its Telford site to support development of the Challenger 3 main battle tank.

Management takes the road in Munich

With the order book filling up, Rheinmetall's leadership is courting institutional investors. The company is attending the Berenberg and Goldman Sachs German Corporate Conference in Munich on Wednesday, and follows that on Thursday with the Baader Bank AG Investment Conference at the same location. Management is expected to set out how rising ammunition demand and fresh service contracts should feed into the group's medium-term stability.
