Ripple Pitches XRP-Backed Credit Pools for 2027 as ETF Outflows and a $387M Exchange Breach Test Sentiment

Ripple is laying the groundwork for a corporate credit product that would let institutional clients pledge XRP as collateral rather than liquidate their holdings, company president Monica Long said, with a broader rollout targeted for 2027. The token would sit locked in liquidity pools for weeks or months at a time, backing short-term payment obligations while issuers keep their positions intact.
Whether that mechanism actually tightens the market depends on where the pool capital comes from. Industry observers note the distinction between outside lenders buying XRP on the open market and Ripple simply supplying coins from its own reserves — the latter would leave circulating supply roughly untouched. Ripple has stayed quiet on the specifics: initial pool size, participating lenders, interest rates and repayment terms all remain undisclosed.
There is precedent to weigh. Back in October 2020, Ripple rolled out a credit line for payment providers funded entirely from its own treasury. Transaction activity picked up, but the firms involved never built lasting XRP inventories of their own — a cautionary data point for anyone expecting the new model to drive durable demand.
Tokenized Assets Targeted for a Fivefold Jump
Long paired the credit initiative with an ambitious growth plan for the XRP Ledger itself. She wants the value of tokenized real-world assets on the network to climb from $6 billion to $30 billion in the next phase, pointing to tokenized money market funds as always-liquid collateral, Treasury-backed repo transactions and stablecoin transfer settlement as the engines behind that expansion.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying XRP?
The developer team is also building out privacy infrastructure aimed squarely at institutional requirements. Confidential transfers using zero-knowledge proofs would mask amounts and balances on the network, while approved auditors retain visibility for regulatory checks. Separately, work continues on interfaces for automated AI agents — Ripple engineering director Ayo Akinyele said transactions initiated by such agents on the ledger have already passed the 11 million mark.
ETF Flows Flip Negative After a Strong September
Market pricing has barely reacted to the roadmap. XRP changed hands at $1.50, sitting 7.4% above its 50-day average of $1.40. But the institutional flow picture turned less comfortable on Friday, when US spot ETFs for the cryptocurrency logged $3.28 million in net outflows, snapping a multi-day run of steady buying. Media reports attributed the pullback to Bitwise's product. For market participants, the reversal marks a break after weeks in which institutional vehicles had propped up the price.
The prior month looked far brighter on both futures and spot desks. Through September, US spot ETFs pulled in a combined $121.4 million, with September 25 standing out as the strongest single session at $22.6 million in fresh money. Yet total assets under management still shrank over the month — losses in the underlying asset ate into the newly invested capital, leaving net holdings lower despite the headline inflows.
Bitget Breach Revives Custody Questions
A severe security incident has added to the cautious mood. Crypto exchange Bitget reported unauthorized withdrawals from its reserves and put the total damage at $387.5 million, including roughly 102.9 million XRP among the stolen assets. According to media reports, the unknown party moved XRP worth about $83 million, while tokens valued at approximately $75 million landed in accounts that cannot be frozen at the protocol level on the XRP Ledger. That absence of an account-freeze mechanism pushed security questions back into the spotlight for institutional investors.
Regulators, meanwhile, have stayed busy. The SEC unveiled new custody proposals for crypto assets on October 1, aimed at investment advisers and regulated funds — a sector-wide framework with no XRP-specific angle. The agency also confirmed on September 28 the effective date of a subsequent amendment to Bitwise's existing ETF.
Dates to Watch in October
Several operational milestones sit on the near-term calendar. Media reports point to October 7 for the closing of a transaction involving Evernorth, while trading of the ticker XRPN on the Nasdaq is scheduled to begin October 8. On the protocol side, activation of the Batch upgrade for the XRP Ledger — designed to bundle up to eight transactions — could arrive as early as October 9.
