Rocket Lab's Neutron Slips to 2027 on Tank Flaw, but Analysts Keep the Faith
Published on 10/20/2026 at 08:11 | Editorial boerse-global.deRocket Lab investors are being asked to trade urgency for endurance. The long-awaited debut of the Neutron rocket has slid from the fourth quarter of 2026 into 2027, and the market has wasted little time repricing the wait.
The culprit sits at the front of the first stage: defects were found in the carbon-composite layers of the fuel tank's forward dome. Rocket Lab is rebuilding that dome from scratch while other manufacturing and testing work continues on schedule. The company said it has identified the root cause and is implementing process improvements.
The shares closed Monday at EUR 45.85, down 20% over the past seven days and 66% below their 52-week high. For holders, the drop marks a shift from betting on a swift commercial debut to settling in for a longer engineering slog.
A Workhorse That Keeps Flying
Against that backdrop, the routine side of the business carries on. A Electron rocket is due to lift off Wednesday from Launch Complex 1 in New Zealand on a mission dubbed "We're Not Hawking Around," carrying three satellites for HawkEye 360.
That cadence is the familiar rhythm of a functioning launch business. Rocket Lab has flown repeatedly for customers such as Japanese Earth-observation firm Synspective — the upcoming StriX mission will be its twelfth for that client — and commercial operators value the dependable frequency. Yet the routine also exposes the limits of the segment: small rockets serve specialized niches, while the heavier payloads and larger addressable market only open up with bigger launch vehicles. That is precisely the territory Neutron is meant to unlock.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?
The Street Trims Targets, Not Ratings
Analysts have already folded the new timeline into their models. KeyBanc cut its price target to $100 from $135 on Oct. 15 while keeping an Overweight rating, explicitly citing the revised Neutron schedule and now assuming one fewer revenue-generating launch in 2027.
Citizens followed on Oct. 16, lowering its target to $90 from $130 and maintaining Market Outperform. Morgan Stanley, according to media reports, reaffirmed its Buy rating the same day with a $105 target. The message across the board: lower numbers, intact convictions.
What the Market Is Really Watching
The central question for the share price now is whether the 2027 timeline holds. Fixing structural manufacturing defects in primary tanks is often a drawn-out engineering challenge, and every extra month of delay ties up development capital while pushing the start of commercial Neutron revenue further out.
The bull case rests on the flaw having surfaced early in testing, before a costly failure on the pad. The parallel progress on other Neutron components suggests the development structure remains intact, and if the composite dome is rebuilt without further complications, the 2027 target stays in view. Neither KeyBanc nor Citizens abandoned its positive stance after the schedule change.
The bear case is just as concrete. Voids and other material flaws in layered composites frequently demand sweeping changes to production processes. Should the rebuild stumble on the first attempt, or should pressure testing later reveal fresh weaknesses, the 2027 launch could slip entirely — a second delay that would push the revenue window further out and inflate development costs.
A Disclosure That Raised Eyebrows
Adding to cautious investors' unease, a mandatory filing on Oct. 1 disclosed that CFO Adam Spice sold 140,157 shares for a total of $9,925,448. The sale followed the exercise of options under a pre-arranged Rule 10b5-1 trading plan, but transactions landing close to operational setbacks tend to temper risk appetite among the more prudent.
The Next Catalyst
As long as Rocket Lab can show the tank-dome rebuild tracking to plan and the remaining tests proceeding as announced, the groundwork for a 2027 maiden flight stays in place — and the valuation can steady, since the market has already priced in the loss of one launch in the target year. The next tangible catalyst is completion and subsequent pressure testing of the newly built dome. Only verified test data on that key component will clarify whether the company can credibly hold its revised schedule.
