The disconnect between Rocket Lab's commercial momentum and its stock price has rarely been starker. Over the past month, the company has stacked up what it calls the largest contract in its history, secured a place in a fresh US Space Force procurement vehicle, and cleared major technical hurdles on its next-generation rocket. The shares, meanwhile, have shed more than a third of their value in 30 days, leaving investors to puzzle over which reality will ultimately win out.
The most recent catalyst arrived on the evening of July 30, when the US Space Force named Rocket Lab one of 15 providers eligible for the National Space Test and Training Complex Innovative Technology and Engineering program — a framework worth up to $981 million covering test, evaluation, and training services in space through 2032. Rocket Lab beat out 20 other bidders for the slot, though no money changes hands at contract signing; revenue will flow through individual task orders as the military expands its space-training infrastructure. The company also qualified to compete for work under a separate new Space Force procurement pool called NITE-STAR, alongside 14 other vendors.
Just days earlier, Rocket Lab had announced its largest order ever: a deal with the US Space Force for suborbital missile-defense launches. And on July 30, it unveiled a multi-launch agreement with Japanese satellite operator iQPS, with dedicated Electron missions slated to begin in late 2027. The security work extends an existing relationship — Rocket Lab is already collaborating with Raytheon on the "Golden Dome" space-based interceptor program and is preparing the "Victus Haze" mission, both of which position the company as a full-service provider offering launch vehicles and satellite platforms from a single source.
The chart tells a different story
None of that has been enough to arrest the slide. The stock closed the week at €56.30, up a modest 0.36 percent on the day but still deep in correction territory. Technically, the company is hitting its marks. The Archimedes engine for the new Neutron rocket has passed qualification, and in mid-July Rocket Lab completed a full static fire of the vehicle's second stage using the AVac engine — a prerequisite for the first flight still targeted for the fourth quarter of 2026. Success there would open the door to bidding on large satellite constellations, a market the company has so far been unable to pursue with its smaller Electron vehicle.
Meanwhile, production of the "Gauss" electric propulsion line is ramping up, diversifying revenue into higher-margin satellite components and reducing reliance on the inherently lumpy launch business. Analysts increasingly view the Space Systems segment as a potential growth engine that could insulate the company from launch-market volatility.
The bear case: Cash burn and sector fatigue
The skeptics have their own set of numbers. Free cash flow has turned negative, and management expects the rest of 2026 to be at best neutral, at worst slightly negative. The $8 billion acquisition of Iridium Communications — a transformative deal that makes Rocket Lab a combined launch-and-satellite-services provider — has required equity and debt raises, bringing with them the usual arbitrage noise around such transactions.

There's also a sector-wide headwind. Comparable space stocks have suffered double-digit percentage losses, suggesting the market is punishing unprofitable space companies indiscriminately. If that rotation continues, Rocket Lab could slide toward its 52-week low of €32.60.
The August 10 inflection point
All eyes now turn to the second-quarter earnings report, scheduled for August 10. Analysts expect revenue of roughly $231.79 million, a significant jump year over year. The report will offer the first detailed commentary on the Iridium integration and, crucially, evidence of whether the backlog is converting into revenue.
A narrowing operating loss or a credible timeline for the Neutron first flight would give bulls ammunition for a recovery toward the 200-day average. Heavier-than-expected integration costs from the recent US and European acquisitions, by contrast, could send the stock back to test the support zones from late 2025. For a company that keeps winning contracts but can't seem to win over the market, the next earnings call can't come soon enough.
