Rocket Lab Sheds 4.7% as Rate Jitters Sweep the Space Sector — Backlog Still Tops 100 Missions

Rocket Lab shares came under pressure on Wednesday, caught in a sector-wide downdraft that had little to do with the company itself. The stock closed at EUR 63.60, down 4.7% on the day, as rising U.S. Treasury yields, firmer energy prices and uncertainty over the Federal Reserve's next move weighed on rate-sensitive growth names.
The retreat was not confined to Rocket Lab. Media reports pointed to a broad sell-off across the space segment, with peers including Redwire, Intuitive Machines and SpaceX all losing ground in parallel. No company-specific bad news emerged from Rocket Lab itself, underscoring that the move was macro-driven rather than a verdict on operations.
That distinction matters. Space companies, with their heavy capital requirements, have long been viewed as vulnerable when borrowing costs climb, and the current bout of rate anxiety fits a familiar pattern. Zooming out, the stock sits 52% below its 52-week high of EUR 133.80 — a gap that reflects substantial prior corrections rather than any fresh deterioration in the business.
Fundamentals Tell a Different Story
Strip away the rate debate and the operational picture looks considerably brighter. Roughly a week ago, Rocket Lab locked in the largest commercial Electron contract in its history — a multi-year arrangement with Earth-observation specialist Synspective covering 20 dedicated launches. Those missions are scheduled to fly between 2028 and 2031, and the deal pushed the company's total launch backlog past 100 missions.
Should investors sell immediately? Or is it worth buying Rocket Lab?
Reliability has kept pace with demand. On September 26, Rocket Lab completed its 97th Electron mission, successfully delivering Synspective's 13th StriX satellite into low Earth orbit at an altitude of 559 kilometers. It marked the company's 18th launch of 2026, evidence that cadence is accelerating and that customers are actively drawing on the service.
Institutional support has followed. On October 1, Citigroup initiated coverage with a buy rating and a $105 price target, signaling confidence in the company's longer-term trajectory.
Governance and Insider Activity in Focus
On the leadership front, regulatory filings with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission showed CFO Adam Spice carried out routine option exercises and share sales in early October — standard disclosures rather than a signal of any shift in outlook.
Despite the latest pullback, the stock continues to trade 5.1% above its 50-day moving average, a technical detail that suggests the recent weakness has not erased its medium-term momentum. The company's operating foundation, meanwhile, remains untouched by the macro-driven repositioning playing out across markets.
For investors, attention now turns to how quickly Rocket Lab can work through its packed launch calendar. With a backlog above 100 missions and a dependable flight record behind it, the case for the business rests on execution — even as bond markets continue to set the tone for growth stocks in the near term.
